After First U.S. Tour, ENHYPEN Recognize theImportance of Each Member: ‘It’s So Genuine’

The K-pop boy band'semotional conclusion for the U.S. leg of their world tour spotlighted theirnatural chemistry and teamwork: "I realized that it's our golden timetogether."

Even though ENHYPEN prepared heartfelt remarks to share withfans at their Radio City Music Hall concert, a stream of tears and a group hugwere not part of their plan. But the unexpected and, according to the boy band,uncharacteristic wave of emotion led to a collective epiphany.

While it’s standard for each member of a K-pop group to individually address the crowdthroughout a concert, the final moments during an encore usually the mostsentimental, ENHYPEN member Sunoo couldn’t hold back tears as he spoke to the group’steamwork “as seven” and “the amount of love I received from my members as wellas the love from the thousands of ENGENEs,” shouting out the group’s fandomname.
콘서트에서 팬들에게 할 각자의 말을 준비하는 것은 케이팝 그룹이라면모두가 하는 것이고 앙코르 때 감정에 북받치 되지만, 엔하이픈의 선우는 “7명으로서의” 팀워크와 “멤버들과수천명의 엔진에게서 받은 사랑”에 대해서 말하면서 울음을 참을 수 없었다.

After group leader Jungwon quickly ran over to wrap Sunoo in a hug, the rest ofthe ENHYPEN members Jay, Heeseung, Jake, Sunghoon and Ni-ki all huddled together with them, linking arms andpatting one another on the back, as their band mate finished his speech.

With the sold-out crowd chanting their names, Jake told them, “Throughour Seoul concert to the American tour, I feel like the seven of us have reallygrown stronger together because of all the incredible love and support you guysgave us.”

As ENHYPEN was showering one another with hugs and compliments whilelending an occasional sleeve to wipe tears away, the K-pop act says they rarely open up to one anotheras they did in front of thousands on stage in NYC.

“It’s kind of cringey,” laughs the group’s eldest member Heeseung, whocelebrated his “happiest” 21st birthday at their NY live debut that doubled asthe final date in the U.S. leg of the group’s Manifesto tour. “I think it’scringey when you compliment each other a lot.” 
“좀 오글거려요”고그룹의 맏형인 희승은 웃는다. 희승은 그룹의 미국 마지막 콘서트였던 뉴욕 콘서트에서 “가장 행복했던” 21한번째 생일을 맞기도 했다고 한다. “서로 너무 칭찬하면 좀 오글거리고 민망해요.”

“We’re just 20-year-old boys so it’s a bit awkward for us,” adds Jake,20, the group’s affable Australian native who took the lead in conversationswith audiences on tour and in this Billboard interview, partly from being the most comfortable member with Englishbut also from a puppy-like energy of excitement. “We don’t really compliment;we just sort of give each other feedback…but I feel like the times that we doshow our love for each other is why it’s so genuine.”

After wrapping seven concerts in six states for the U.S. leg of theirManifesto world tour, the group notes their first time performing in multiplecities on the road together, highlighted the importance of all sevenindividuals that make up ENHYPEN 
Manifesto 월드투어의 일환으로 미국 6개 주에서 7번의 콘서트를 가진 엔하이픈은 여러 도시로 이동하면서 공연해 본적은 처음이었다고 말하며 서로 다른 7명이 모여 엔하이픈이 되는 것의 중요함을 강조하였다.

“That’s really important for me because we started together as sevenmembers and it has an absolute value for me,” Heeseung says of themultinational act with members representing Korea, America, Australia andJapan. “We spent a lot of time together and, each and every member, I hold themdearest to my heart. So, I think that after this tour I realized that it’s ourgolden time together. So, yeah, I really love my members” before, naturally,laughing as he adds a “cringe” to round out his thoughts.
“그게 저에는 정말 중요해요. 왜냐하면 우리는 처음부터 7멤버로 출발하였고 그 사실이 저에게는 절대적이예요,”라고 한국, 미국, 호주, 일본 출신인다국적 멤버들에 대해 말하는 희승. “우린 많은 시간을 같이 보내고 있고, 멤버 모두가 저에게는 너무 소중해요. 그래서 이 투어 후 지금이우리가 함께하는 우리의 골든 타임이라는걸 깨달았어요. 그래서, 네, 전 정말 멤버들을 사랑해요” 그러면서 이렇게 말하는 것은 그래도여전히 “오그라든다”고 웃는다. 

ENHYPEN’s understated, soft-speaking leader Jungwon says private momentspointed out their compatibility to him. “The little things that I did with mymembers really cheered me up,” he explains. “We’d rehearse a lot, and sayingthings like, ‘Let’s go, together’ before we go on stage; those little thingsreally lifted me up.” 
엔하이픈의 나서지 않으면서 상냥한 리더 정원은 멤버들만의 프라이빗한 순간들이 서로 얼마나 사이가 좋으며 잘 어울리는지를 보여준다고 말한다. “멤버들과 함께 하는 작고 소소한 것들이 정말 기분을 좋게해요,”라고 설명한다. “저희는 연습을 많이 하는데 그때마다, 무대에 서기전에 ‘함께 레츠고’ 라고 해요. 그런 작은 것들이 정말 기분을 업 시키죠.”

Jake adds that the close quarters for concerts also created a naturalcamaraderie. “Between stages, we have like a little booth thing where we had toget changed really quickly but it’s really crowded and we can’t really movearound,” he says. “But I can really sort of see our chemistry showing becausewe have to look out for each other—it’s always really messy in there.”

ENHYPEN was born out of the singingcompetition I-Land where 23 K-pop hopefuls fought for a spot ina new boy band with HYBE founder Bang Si-Hyuk overseeing the competition as Rain, BTS, Zico, SEVENTEEN and TomorrowXTogether guest mentored. Despite the high stakes of making theband, ENHYPEN never saw one another as rivals. 
엔하이픈은 “아이랜드”라는 오디션 프로그램을 통해 탄생한 그룹이다. 이 프로에서 23명의 연습생들이 하이브의 창립자 방시혁과 함께하는 새로운 보이 그룹의 멤버자리를 놓고 경쟁하였고, 이 프로에는 레인, BTS, 지코,세븐틴, TXT등이 멘토로 출연하였다. 최종멤버가 되기 위해 치열히 경쟁했지만 엔하이픈 멤버들은 서로를 한번도 라이벌로 생각한 적이 없었다고 한다.

“I-Land was sort of a competition, but I don’t think any of us reallyfelt like it was,” Jake explains. “I feel like to the viewers that watched theshow, it might seem like that but we had this feeling that we all had to dowell and make good performances.”
“아이랜드가 경쟁이였던 것은 맞지만, 우리 중 아무도 경쟁이라고 느끼지 않았던 것 같아요.”라고 제이크는 설명한다. “시청자들은 그렇게 보았을 수 있지만, 저희는 우리 모두가 잘해서 좋은 무대를 보여 주어야 한다고 생각했던 것 같아요.”

Jay adds that some members already had an establishedbrotherhood from their early days in the K-pop system. “I had trained withHeeseung for about four years, it already feels like he’s family.”

After I-Land wrapped in September 2020, the septet told an unfoldingstory as growing superstars through albums. From their debut EP Border: Day One discussing their start in the industry (and peaking at No. 14on Billboard‘s World Albums chart in early 2021) to this past July’s Manifesto: Day 1 soaring to No. 6 on the Billboard 200 and earning the group their first No. 1 on Top Album Sales with 69,000 album copies sold in its firstthree weeks, global fans are growing with the band. Earlier this year, ENHYPENscored their first No. 1 single on the Japan Hot 100 as well with their electro-pop/rock hybrid“Tamed-Dashed,” no doubt with help from Japan-born member Ni-ki, who’s loudestwhen making his band mates laugh throughout the interview as much as they do him

“I feel like every album and every song we put out sortof portrays what we’re feeling in that moment and what we’re going through,”Jake says. “Our first album was about moving on from I-Land, becoming an idol, and debuting as an idol. Our second one [Border: Carnival] was sort of saying what we felt while performing as anartist. Now, it’s been two years since we became an idol and now we’re sharingour story to the whole world. Every album has its own meaning and I thinkthat’s one of our strongest points.” Jay calls it ENHYPEN’s “history.”
“우리의 모든 앨범, 노래가 그 순간에 우리가 느낀 감정들과 경험한 것들을 표현해 주었다고 생각해요”라고 제이크는 말한다. “우리의 첫 앨범은 “아이랜드”에서 나와 아이돌로 데뷔하는 이야기 였죠. 두번째 “Border: Carnival”은 아티스트로 무대를 하면서 느끼는 감정을 말해줬다고 생각해요. 이제 아이돌이 된 지도 2년이 되어, 우리들의 이야기를 전세계가 공유하게 되었습니다. 모든 앨범이 그만의 의미가 있고 그게 우리의 가장 큰 강점중 하나라고 생각해요.” 제이는 이것을 엔하이픈의 “역사”라고 부른다.

When it came to Sunoo, one of the younger members knownby fans for his cute and sunny disP0SITION that radiates even during an earlyMonday morning interview, his concerns about completing the career milestone inENHYPEN’s first U.S. tour were daunting. He says the tearful chat at theconcert was more of a release of relief. 
팬들에게 귀여움과 밝음으로 잘 알려졌으며 이 월요일 이른 아침 인터뷰에도 귀엽고 밝은 모습을 보여준, 동생 라인 중 한명인 선우는 아이돌 커리어에서 중요한 이정표가 될 엔하이픈의 첫 미국 투어를 잘 끝낼 수 있을지 걱정했다고 한다. 콘서트에서 울먹이는 말한 것도 (*끝냈다는) 안도감 때문이였다고 한다.

“Personally, I had a lot of concerns during the tour,”the 19-year-old says. “The main concern being, ‘Would I be able to successfullyround up this concert?’ I think it would have been impossible to actuallysuccessfully wrap up this concert and tour without ENGENEs, members, and ourstaff members who always support me. So, I got teary-eyed because I was reallytouched by the fact that we really successfully ended this tour but I also wantto mention that I also got a lot of energy from this tour.” 
“저는 투어에 대해 걱정 되는 것이 많았어요”라고 이 19세는 말한다. “가장 큰 걱정은 ‘내가 이 콘서트를 성공적으로 잘 끝낼 수 있을까’ 였죠. 저를 항상 응원해준 엔진, 멤버들, 그리고 회사 분들이 없었다면 콘서트나 투어를 이렇게 성공적으로 끝낼 수 없었을거 같아요. 그래서 정말 투어를 잘 끝냈다는 생각이 들면서 감정이 올라와 눈물이 났어요. 그런데 이 투어를 통해 저도 많은 힘을 얻었다는 것도 말씀드리고 싶어요.”

Jake adds their the tour experience played a big part innaturally rushing to Sunoo’s side: “We knew what he was going through. Beforethe last show, he would talk about being sort of tired and just not feeling 100percent. We could all agree and sort of empathize.”

While Jay’s warm side comes through in concert and duringthis interview despite his deadpan delivery (he’s the first to say “never” whenasked if the group opens up to each other), the Seattle-born star had his ownworries about coming Stateside as well. 
무표정한 표정으로 말함에도 콘서트나 이 인터뷰에서도 항상 따뜻함이 느껴지는 제이는 (멤버들이 서로 속을 털어놓냐는 질문에 “절대로”라고 처음 말한 사람도 제이였다) 시애틀에서 태어났기 떄문에 미국에 가는것에 대해서 자신만의 걱정도 있었다고 털어놓는다.

“I’ve been nervous because it was the first time I cameback to States as an artist,” he says. “I already went to almost every city weperformed, but it really feels different since I was a little boy. I think Iwas just proud of all of us doing performances in my home country; it reallytouched me a lot.” Jay told his members “all of us did incredible, all of usdid awesome” on stage at the concert’s end. 
“아티스트로 미국에 가는 것이 처음이라서 긴장 됐어요”라고 말한다. “공연한 도시들은 예전에 거의 다 가 본 곳 들이지만 어릴때와는 정말 다르게 느껴졌습니다. 그냥 내가 태어난 나라에서 우리 모두가 같이 공연하는 것이 너무 자랑스러웠어요. 그 점이 정말 감동적이였죠.” 제이는 “우리 모두 정말 잘했어, 모두 멋졌다”고 콘서트가 끝에 무대위에서 멤버들에게 말해주었다.

Looking ahead, the septet thinks and speaks excitedlyabout future directions after this first extensive tour. The quieter butundeniably well-spoken Sunghoon, who’s gained fame in K-pop for his hostingabilities, says the tour experience opened his eyes to a new way of creatingmusic. “Up till now, we’ve focused more on our music itself and the albumitself,” he explains. “But after the U.S. tour, I thought that it would be goodif we can actually envision our concert and performance while we make the albumand that would improve our delivery.

Heeseung is curious about adding city pop into thoup’s sound. At the same time, Jungwon wonders how the group could fare ifthey opted for songs that mix fewer genres after blending punk-rock and electronicproduction on “Drunk-Dazed” or swirling influences of Chicago drill withdance-pop buildups on “Future Perfect (Pass the MIC).” Ni-ki hints to embracingmore freestyle freedom on stage, noting the rendition of “Future Perfect” thoup does during its encore was his personal tour highlight. “We use the handmics for the encore performance,” the skilled dancer shares, the mics allowingthem to relax on the group’s synchronized choreography. “That made it for meand was my favorite performance.” 
희승은 엔하이픈의 사운드에 시티팝을 더하면 어떨까 궁금하다고 한다. 정원은 “Drunk-Dazed”로 펑크락과 엘리트릭 사운드를 보여주었고, “Future Perfect (Pass the MIC)”로 시카고 드릴과 댄스팝을 섞어 보았으니 다음 노래에서는 섞는 장르 수를 좀 적게 하면 어떨까 생각한다고. 니키는 무대에서 좀 더 프리스타일로 자유를 느끼보고 싶다고 하면서 앙코르로 “Future Perfect” 무대를 한 것이 투어에서 가장 좋았던 것 중 하나였다고 설명한다. “앙코를 공연에서는 핸드 마이크를 사용하였어요.”라고 이 뛰어난 댄서를 설명한다. 마이크 덕분에 그룹의 칼군무를 좀 더 느슨하게 (*신경을 덜 쓰고) 할 수 있었다고 한다. “그래서 그 무대가 제가 가장 좋아한무대가 되었어요.”

No matter what the performance, ENGENEs are sure to enjoywherever the group’s story heads next which comforts the group and inspiresthem to look excitedly forward together. 
하지만 어떤 무대이든, 이 그룹이 앞으로 어떤 이야기를 보여 주든, 이들이 서로를 위하면서 함께 나아간다면 엔진들은 모두 기꺼이 즐겨 줄 것이 분명하다.

“If we focus on our albums, concerts, and tours, theresults will naturally follow,” Sunghoon believes. Jungwon says, “Charts andrankings are not something we can control, but what we can control is the focuson our performance and give a lot of happiness and entertainment.” Notably, noone has a funny comment or adds a “cringe” to their leader’s final words,perhaps because it’s an undeniable sentiment that they all feel comfortable andconfident sharing with one another.
“우리가 우리 앨범, 콘서트, 투어에 집중하면, 결과는 자연스럽게 따라올 것이라고 생각합니다”것을 믿는다고 성훈을 말한다. 정원은 “차트나 순위는 우리가 콘트롤할 수 있는 것들이 아닙니다. 하지만 우리의 퍼포먼스에 집중하면서 많은 행복과 즐거움을 줄 수 있는 것은 우리가 콘트롤 할 수 있는 영역이죠.”라고 말한다. 분명히, 이런 리더의 마지막 한마디에 웃긴 농담을 던지거나 “오글거린다”고 말하는 멤버는 없었다. 어쩌면 바로 이것이 엔하이픈 멤버들이 서로 분명히 동의하며 공감하는 그런 감정이기 때문이기에.
