제2차 식민지전쟁인 미국과 영국의 전쟁을 소재로 한 컨트리 가수
자니 호튼의 최대 힛곡으로 전설이나 영웅적 공훈이나 무용담을
소재로 대표적인 saga song이다. 1812년은 유럽에서는 나폴레옹 군이
러시아를 공격하다 패퇴한 나폴레옹 전쟁이 있었다. 미국에서는
1812년 6월 19일 미국과 캐너다 국경에 머물고 있던 영국군에게
선전포고를 한 뒤, 1814년까지 3년 전쟁을 치뤘고, 미국은 모두
2,260명의 전사자를 냈다.
이 전쟁에서 최후의 전투로 알려진 1815년 1월 8일 앤드루 잭슨 대령이
이끄는 미군이 페이컨햄 사령관의 영국군을 뉴 올린스에서 무찔러
대승했는데 1814년 12월 24일에 종전 조인이 된 2주 후의 일이었다.
1955년에는 아칸소 스노우볼에서 역사교사로 있던 지미 드립트웃
(1907년 아칸소 마운틴 뷰 출신)은 자기 학생들로부터 ‘8th January’란
구전 민요를 알게 되었고, 이를 바탕으로 시를 정리하고,
‘뉴 올린스의 전투’로 타이틀을 번안했다.
1957년에 악보를 등록 출판했다.
이를 4년후인 1959년에 컨트리가수 자니 호튼이 레코드를 냈다.
자니 호튼은 1925년 4월 30일 이스트 로스 앤젤러스에서 농부인
잔 롤리 호튼의 3남2녀가운데 막네로 태어나 아버지의
고향 텍서스에서 자라났다.1950년에 짐 리브스가 DJ로 근무하던
KGRI라디오에서 주최한 탤런트 컨테스트에 출전하여 우승을 차지했다.
이 노래는 1959년 1월 27일 오후 7시 30분부터 10시 30분까지 3시간
동안 테너시주 내쉬빌에 있는 브래들리 필름 & 리코딩 스튜디오에서
세션을 가졌는데 본래 4분짜리를 2분 33초로 축소하여 제작했다.
이 날 ‘All For The Love Of A Girl’도 함께 리코딩하여 이 싱글의
뒷면(플립 사이드)에 편집하였다. 싱글 차트에서는 1959년 5월 5일에
데뷔하여 컨트리 분야에서 5월 18일부터 연속 10주동안, 6월 1일
부터는 팝 분야에서 연속 6주간 No. 1을 장식하는 대 히트를 날렸다.
그리고 1959년 제2회 그래미상에서 ‘이해의 노래’, ‘최우수 컨트리 &
웨스턴 가수상’등 2개 부문을 획득했다.
