이 책을 어른에게 바친데 대해 어린이들에게 용서를

빈다.

그럴 만한 중대한 이유가 내게는 있다.

내가 이 세상에서 사귄 가장 훌륭한 친구가 이

어른이라는 점이다.

또 다른 이유도 있는데 그것은 이 어른이 모든 걸

어린이를 위한 책들까지도 모두 이해한다는 점이다.

세 번째 이유는 이 어른이 프랑스에 살고 있는데

그곳에서 굶주리고 추위에 떨고 있다는 것이다.

그는 위로받아야 할 처지에 있다.

이 모든 이유들이 그 래도 부족하다면 예전의,

어린 시절의 그에게 이 책을 바치기로 하겠다.

어른은 누구나 다 처음엔 어린 아이었다.

(그러나 그것을 기억하는 어른들은 그다지 많지 않다).

따라서 내 헌사를 이렇게 고친다.

I ask the indulgence of the children who may read

this book for dedicating it to a grown-up.

I have a serious reason:

he is the best friend I have in the world.

I have another reason: this grown-up

understands everything,

even books about children.

I have a third reason: he lives in France

where he is hungry and cold.

He needs cheering up.

If all these reasons are not enough,

I will dedicate the book to the child from whom

grown-up grew.

All grown-ups were once children-although

few of them remember it.

And so I correct my dedication:

Je demande pardon aux enfants d'avoir dédié ce

livre à une grande personne.

J'ai une excuse sérieuse: cette grande personne

est le meilleur ami que j'ai au monde.

J'ai une autre excuse: cette grande personne

peut tout comprendre, même les livres pour

enfants.

J'ai une troisième excuse: cette grande personne

habite la France où elle a faim et froid.

Elle a besoin d'être consolée.

Si toutes ces excuses ne suffisent pas, je veux

bien dédier ce livre à l'enfant qu'a été autrefois

cette grande personne. Toutes les grandes

personnes ont d'abord été des enfants.

(Mais peu d'entre elles s'en souviennent).

Je corrige donc ma dédicace:
