여우가 나타난 것은 바로 그때였다.

It was then that the fox appeared.

"안녕" 여우가 말했다.

"Good morning," said the fox.

"안녕" 어린왕자는 공손히 대답하고 몸을 돌렸으나 아무것도 보이지 않았다.

"Good morning," the little prince responded politely, although when he turned around he saw nothing.

"난 여기 사과나무 밑에 있어" 좀전의 그 목소리가 말했다

"I am right here," the voice said, "under the apple tree."

 

"너는 누구지? 넌 참 예쁘구나....." 어린왕자가 말했다.

"Who are you?" asked the little prince, and added, "You are very pretty to look at."

"난 여우야" 여우가 말했다.

"I am a fox," the fox said.

"이리와서 나와 함께 놀아. 난 정말 슬프단다....." 어린왕자가 제의했다.

"Come and play with me," proposed the little prince. "I am so unhappy."

"난 너와 함께 놀 수 없어" 여우가 말했다. "나는 길들여져 있지 않으니까"

"I cannot play with you," the fox said. "I am not tamed."

"아, 미안해" 어린왕자가 말했다.

"Ah! Please excuse me," said the little prince.

그러나 잠깐 생각해 본 후에 그는 다시 말했다.

But, after some thought, he added:

 

 

 

" '길들인다' 는게 뭐지?"

"What does that mean--'tame'?"

"너는 여기 사는 애가 아니구나. 넌 무얼 찾고 있니?" 여우가 물었다.

"You do not live here," said the fox. "What is it that you are looking for?"

"난 사람들을 찾고 있어" 어린왕자가 말했다. " '길들인다' 는게 뭐지?"

"I am looking for men," said the little prince. "What does that mean--'tame'?"

"사람들은 소총을 가지고 있고 사냥을 하지. 그게 참 곤란한 일이야! 그들은 병아리들도 길러. 그것이 유일한 관심사지. 너 병아리를 찾니?" 여우가 물었다.

"Men," said the fox. "They have guns, and they hunt. It is very disturbing. They also raise chickens. These are their only interests. Are you looking for chickens?"

"아니야. 난 친구들을 찾고 있어. '길들인다' 라는게 뭐지?" 어린왕자가 말했다.

"No," said the little prince. "I am looking for friends. What does that mean--'tame'?"

"그건 너무 잘 잊혀지고 있는거지. 그건 '관계를 만든다.....'는 뜻이야" 여우가 말했다.

"It is an act too often neglected," said the fox. It means to establish ties."

"관계를 만든다고?"

"'To establish ties'?"

"그래" 여우는 말했다. "넌 아직은 나에겐 수많은 다른 소년들과 다를 바 없는 한 소년에 지나지 않아. 그래서 난 너를 필요로 하지 않고, 난 너에겐 수많은 다른 여우와 똑같은 한 마리 여우에 지나지 않아. 하지만 네가 나를 길들인다면 나는 너에겐 이세상에서 오직 하나밖에 없는 존재가 될꺼야....."

"Just that," said the fox. "To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of you. And you, on your part, have no need of me. To you, I am nothing more than a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I shall be unique in all the world . . ."

 

"차츰 무슨 말인지 이해가 가" 어린 왕자가 말했다. "꽃 한송이가 있는데.... 그 꽃이 나를 길들인 걸 꺼야...."

"I am beginning to understand," said the little prince. "There is a flower . . . I think that she has tamed me . . ."

"그럴지도 모르지" 여우가 말했다. "지구는 온갖 것들이 다 있으니까....."

"It is possible," said the fox. "On the Earth one sees all sorts of things."

"아, 아니야! 그건 지구에서가 아니야" 어린왕자가 말했다.

"Oh, but this is not on the Earth!" said the little prince.

여우는 몹시 궁금한 기색이었다.

The fox seemed perplexed, and very curious.

"그런 다른 별에서의?"

"On another planet?"

"그래"

"Yes."

"그 별엔 사냥꾼들이 있지?"

"Are there hunters on that planet?"

"아니. 없어"

"No."

"그거 참 이상하군! 그럼 병아리는?"

"Ah, that is interesting! Are there chickens?"

"없어"

"No."

"이 세상에 완전한 데라곤 없군" 여우는 한숨을 내쉬었다.

"Nothing is perfect," sighed the fox.

 

그러나 여우는 하던 이야기로 다시 말머리를 돌렸다.

But he came back to his idea.

"내 생활은 단조롭단다. 나는 병아리를 쫓고 사람들은 나를 쫓지. 병아리들은 모두 똑같고 사람들도 모두 똑같아. 그래서 난 좀 심심해. 하지만 네가 날 길들인다면 내 생활은 환히 밝아질 거야. 다른 모든 발자국 소리와 구별되는 발자국 소리를 나는 알게 되겠지. 다른 발자국 소리들은 나를 땅 밑으로 기어들어가게 만들 테지만 너의 발자국 소리는 땅 밑 굴에서 나를 밖으로 불러낼 거야! 그리고 저길 봐! 저기 밀밭 보이지? 난 빵은 먹지 않아. 밀은 내겐 아무 소용도 없는 거야. 밀밭은 나에게 아무것도 생각나게 하지 않아. 그건 서글픈 일이지! 그런데 너는 금빛 머리칼을 가졌어. 그러니 네가 나를 길들인다면 정말 근사할꺼야! 밀은 금빛이니까 나에게 너를 생각나게 할거거든. 그럼 난 밀밭 사이를 지나가는 바람소리를 사랑하게 될꺼야...."

"My life is very monotonous," the fox said. "I hunt chickens; men hunt me. All the chickens are just alike, and all the men are just alike. And, in consequence, I am a little bored. But if you tame me, it will be as if the sun came to shine on my life. I shall know the sound of a step that will be different from all the others. Other steps send me hurrying back underneath the ground. Yours will call me, like music, out of my burrow. And then look: you see the grain-fields down yonder? I do not eat bread. Wheat is of no use to me. The wheat fields have nothing to say to me. And that is sad. But you have hair that is the color of gold. Think how wonderful that will be when you have tamed me! The grain, which is also golden, will bring me back the thought of you. And I shall love to listen to the wind in the wheat . . ."

 

여우는 입을 다물고 어린왕자를 오래오래 쳐다보더니.

The fox gazed at the little prince, for a long time.

"부탁이야..... 나를 길들여줘!" 하고 말했다.

"Please--tame me!" he said.

"그래. 나도 그러고 싶어" 어린왕자는 대답했다. "하지만 내겐 시간이 많지 않아. 친구들을 찾아내야 하고 알아볼 일도 많아"

"I want to, very much," the little prince replied. "But I have not much time. I have friends to discover, and a great many things to understand."

"우린 우리가 길들이는 것만을 알 수 있는 거란다" 여우가 말했다. "사람들은 이제 아무것도 알 시간이 없어졌어. 그들은 상점에서 이미 만들어져 있는 것들을 사거든. 그런데 친구를 파는 상점은 없으니까 사람들은 이제 친구가 없는 거지. 친구를 가지고 싶다면 나를 길들여줘"

"One only understands the things that one tames," said the fox. "Men have no more time to understand anything. They buy things all ready made at the shops. But there is no shop anywhere where one can buy friendship, and so men have no friends any more. If you want a friend, tame me . . ."

"그럼 어떻게 해야 하는거지?" 어린왕자가 물었다.

"What must I do, to tame you?" asked the little prince.

"참을성이 있어야 해" 여우가 대답했다. "우선 내게서 좀 떨어져서 이렇게 풀숲에 앉아 있어. 난 너를 곁눈질해 볼꺼야. 넌 아무말도 하지 말아. 말은 오해의 근원이지. 날마다 넌 조금씩 더 가까이 다가앉을 수 있게 될꺼야....."

"You must be very patient," replied the fox. "First you will sit down at a little distance from me--like that--in the grass. I shall look at you out of the corner of my eye, and you will say nothing. Words are the source of misunderstandings. But you will sit a little closer to me, every day . . ."

다음날 어린왕자는 그리로 갔다.

The next day the little prince came back.

"언제나 같은 시각에 오는 게 더 좋을꺼야" 여우가 말했다. "이를 테면, 네가 오후 네시에 온다면 난 세시부터 행복해지겠지. 네시에는 흥분해서 안절부절 못할꺼야. 그래서 행복이 얼마나 값진 것인가 알게 되겠지! 아무때나 오면 몇시에 마음을 곱게 단장해야 하는지 모르잖아. 의식이 필요하거든"

"It would have been better to come back at the same hour," said the fox. "If, for example, you come at four o'clock in the afternoon, then at three o'clock I shall begin to be happy. I shall feel happier and happier as the hour advances. At four o'clock, I shall already be worrying and jumping about. I shall show you how happy I am! But if you come at just any time, I shall never know at what hour my heart is to be ready to greet you . . . One must observe the proper rites . . ."

"의식이 뭐야?" 어린왕자가 물었다.

"What is a rite?" asked the little prince.

"그것도 너무 자주 잊혀지고 있는 거야" 여우가 말했다. "그건 어느 하루를 다른 날들과 다르게 만들고, 어느 한시간을 다른 시간들과 다르게 만드는 거지. 예를들면 내가 아는 사냥꾼에게도 의식이 있어. 그들은 목요일이면 마을의 처녀들과 춤을 추지. 그래서 목요일은 신나는 날이지! 난 포도밭까지 산보를 가고. 사냥꾼들이 아무때나 춤을 추면, 하루하루가 모두 똑같이 되어 버리잖아. 그럼 난 하루도 휴가가 없게 될거고......"

"Those also are actions too often neglected," said the fox. "They are what make one day different from other days, one hour from other hours. There is a rite, for example, among my hunters. Every Thursday they dance with the village girls. So Thursday is a wonderful day for me! I can take a walk as far as the vineyards. But if the hunters danced at just any time, every day would be like every other day, and I should never have any vacation at all."

 

그래서 어린 왕자는 여우를 길들였다. 출발의 시간이 다가왔을 때 여우는 말했다.

So the little prince tamed the fox. And when the hour of his departure drew near--

"아아! 난 울 것만 같아"

"Ah," said the fox, "I shall cry."

"그건 네 잘못이야. 나는 너의 마음을 아프게 하고 싶지 않았어. 하지만 내가 널 길들여 주길 네가 원했잖아....." 어린왕자가 말했다.

"It is your own fault," said the little prince. "I never wished you any sort of harm; but you wanted me to tame you . . ."

"그건 그래." 여우의 말이었다.

"Yes, that is so," said the fox.

"한데 넌 울려고 그러잖아!" 어린왕자가 말했다.

"But now you are going to cry!" said the little prince.

"그래, 정말 그래" 여우가 말했다.

"Yes, that is so," said the fox.

"그러니 넌 이익본게 아무것도 없잖아!"

"Then it has done you no good at all!"

"이익본게 있지. 밀밭의 색깔 때문에 말야" 여우가 말했다. 잠시 후 그가 다시 말을 이었다.

"It has done me good," said the fox, "because of the color of the wheat fields." And then he added:

"장미꽃들을 다시 가서 봐. 너는 너의 장미꽃이 이 세상에 오직 하나 뿐이란 것을 깨닫게 될 거야. 그리고 내게 돌아와서 작별인사를 해줘. 그러면 내가 네게 한 가지 비밀을 선물할께"

"Go and look again at the roses. You will understand now that yours is unique in all the world. Then come back to say goodbye to me, and I will make you a present of a secret."

 

 

어린왕자는 장미꽃을 보러 갔다.

The little prince went away, to look again at the roses.

"너희들은 나의 장미와 하나도 닮지 않았어. 너희들은 아직은 아무것도 아니야" 그들에게 말했다. "아무도 너희들을 길들이지 않았고 너희들 역시 아무도 길들이지 않았어. 너희들은 예전의 내 여우와 같아. 그는 수많은 다른 여우들과 꼭 같은 여우일 뿐이었어. 하지만 내가 그를 친구로 만들었기 때문에 그는 이제 이 세상에서 오직 하나뿐인 여우야"

"You are not at all like my rose," he said. "As yet you are nothing. No one has tamed you, and you have tamed no one. You are like my fox when I first knew him. He was only a fox like a hundred thousand other foxes. But I have made him my friend, and now he is unique in all the world."

그러자 장미꽃들은 어쩔 줄을 몰라했다.

And the roses were very much embarassed.

"너희들은 아름답지만 텅 비어있어" 그가 계속해서 말했다."누가 너희들을 위해서 죽을 수 없을 테니까. 물론 나의 꽃은 지나가는 행인에겐 너희들과 똑같이 생긴 것으로 보이겠지. 하지만 그 꽃 한 송이는 내게는 너희들 모두보다도 더 중요해. 내가 그에게 물을 주었기 때문이지. 내가 벌레를 잡아준 것(나비 때문에 두세 마리 남겨둔 것말고)도 그 꽃이기 때문이지. 불평을 하거나 자랑을 늘어 놓는 것을, 또 때로는 말없이 침묵을 지키는 것을 내가 귀기울여 들어 준 것도 그 꽃이기 때문이지. 그건 내 꽃이기 때문이지"

"You are beautiful, but you are empty," he went on. "One could not die for you. To be sure, an ordinary passerby would think that my rose looked just like you--the rose that belongs to me. But in herself alone she is more important than all the hundreds of you other roses: because it is she that I have watered; because it is she that I have put under the glass globe; because it is she that I have sheltered behind the screen; because it is for her that I have killed the caterpillars (except the two or three that we saved to become butterflies); because it is she that I have listened to, when she grumbled, or boasted, or ever sometimes when she said nothing. Because she is my rose.

그리고 그는 여우에게로 돌아갔다.

And he went back to meet the fox.

 

"안녕" 그가 말했다.

"Goodbye," he said.

"안녕" 여우가 말했다. "내 비밀은 이런거야. 그것은 아주 단순하지. 오로지 마음만 보아야 잘 보인다는 거야. 가장 중요한건 눈에 보이지 않는단다"

"Goodbye," said the fox. "And now here is my secret, a very simple secret: It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye."

"가장 중요한건 눈에 보이지 않는단다" 잘 기억하기 위해 어린왕자가 되뇌었다.

"What is essential is invisible to the eye," the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.

"너의 장미꽃을 그토록 소중하게 만드는건 그 꽃을 위해 네가 소비한 그 시간 이란다"

"It is the time you have wasted for your rose that makes your rose so important."

".....내가 내 장미꽃을 위해 소비한 시간이란다" 잘 기억하기 위해 어린왕자가 말했다.

"It is the time I have wasted for my rose--" said the little prince, so that he would be sure to remember.

"사람들은 그 진리를 잊어 버렸어" 여우가 말했다. "하지만 넌 그것을 잊으면 안돼. 너는 네가 길들인 것에 언제까지나 책임이 있게 되는거지. 너는 네 장미에 대해 책임이 있어....."

"Men have forgotten this truth," said the fox. "But you must not forget it. You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed. You are responsible for your rose . . ."

"나는 장미에 대해 책임이 있어....." 잘 기억하기 위해 어린왕자는 되뇌었다.

"I am responsible for my rose," the little prince repeated, so that he would be sure to remember.
