그녀는 인종과 성을 "초월"했다는 칭찬을 들을 때마다 어이없어 한다. "사람들은 나를 보고 '당신을 흑인 작가, 혹은 여류 작가라고 생각하지 않습니다'라고 말할 때도 있고, '백인들에 대해서도 한 번 써보시죠'라고 할 때가 있다. 칭찬의 의도에서 한 말들이다. 결국 '당신은 나에 대해서 써도 될만큼 잘 쓴다'는 얘기다." 그녀는 덧붙인다: "평론가들의 언어를 파해치기 위해서는 위험을 부담해야 한다. 높은 편견의 벽에 맞서면서도 '나는 작가이고 인종은 중요하지 않다'라는 말을 하고 싶지도 않았고, 랭스턴 휴스처럼 나 자신을 이국화하고 싶지도 않았고, 지적인 과시로 전략하고 싶지도 않았다. 난 중심에 서서, '나는 흑인 여류 작가이고 흑인들에 대해서 창작한다'고 말하고 싶었다. 그런 말을 한다고 인기가 솟을 일은 없었지만 후에 올 작가들은 최소한 우리 세대의 수작으로 하여금 '꼬리표'를 다는 일은 면할 수 있지 않을까. 작품의 퀄리티를 타는 것이 더 중요하다고 생각했다. 퀄러티가 실패하면, 나의 이러한 의도들 또한 실패하니까."

She is scornful about being praised for "transcending" race

and gender. "Some people say, 'I never think of you as a

black writer, or a woman writer', and when they say, 'why

don't you write about white people?' it's meant as a

compliment, that 'you're good enough to write about me'."

She adds: "In trying to break open the critical language you

have to take risks. I was up against a wall of assumptions,

and I was trying not to say, 'I'm a writer and race isn't

important to me', or to exoticise myself like Langston Hughes,

or be pompously literate. And I didn't want to sneak into the

non-black box; I wanted to take centre space and say: 'I'm

a black woman writer and I write about black people.' I didn't

win friends, but the writers who followed have a better

chance of not being 'labelled' because of my generation. I

thought I'd ride on the quality of the work; if that failed, the

argument would fail with it."
