While visiting England,
George Bush is invited to tea with the queen.
He asks her what her leadership philoshophy is.
She says that it is to surround herself with intelligent people.
He asks how she knows if they're intelligent.
"By asking them the right questions," says the queen.
"Allow me to demonstrate."
She phones Tony Blair and says,
"Mr. Prime Minister. Please answer this question:
Your mother has a child, and your father has a child,
and this child is not your brother or sister. Who is it?"
Tony Blair responds, "It's me, Ma'am."
"Correct. Thank you and good bye sir." says the queen.
She hangs up and says, "Did you get that, Mr. Bush?"
"Yes ma'am. Thanks a lot. I'll definitely be using that!"
Upon returning to Washington,
he decides he'd better put the Senate majority leader to the test.
He summons Trent Lott to the White House and says,
"Senator Lott, I wonder if you can answer a question for me."
"Why of course, sir. What's on your mind?"
"Uhh, your mother has a child, and your father has a child,
and this child is not your brother or your sister. Who is it?"
Lott hems and haws and finally asks,
"Can I think about it and get back to you?"
Bush agrees, and Lott leaves.
He immediately calls a meeting of other senior Republican senators, and they puzzle over the question for several hours, but nobody can come up with an answer.
Finally, in desperation, Lott calls Colin Powell at the State Department and explains his problem.
"Now lookee here, son, yor mother has a child, and your father has a child, and this child is not your brother or your sister. Who is it?"
Powell answers immediately, "It's me, of course."
Much relieved,
Lott rushes back to the White House and exclaims,
"I know the answer sir! I know who it is! It's Colin Powell!"
And Bush replies in disgust,
"Wrong, you dumb shit, it's Tony Blair!"
영국에 방문한 동안, 조지 부시 대통령은 영국 여왕(*엘리자베스 2세)으로부터 차 한 잔을 함께 마시도록 초대받았다.
부시 대통령은 엘리자베스 여왕에게 어떤 리더쉽 철학이 있느냐고 질문을 하였다. 그러자 여왕은 주변의 지적인 사람들로부터 도움을 받는 것이라고 대답했다. 부시 대통령은 그렇다면 주변 사람들이 지적인지 어떻게 아느냐고 물었다.
여왕은 그러자 "올바른 질문을 함으로써 알아볼 수 있지요"라 대답한 뒤, "직접 보여드려도 될까요?"라고 말했다.
그녀는 토니 블레어 영국총리에게 전화를 건 뒤 다음과 같이 물었다.
"총리님, 이 질문에 답을 좀 주시지요. 당신의 어머니에게 아이가 하나 있고, 당신의 아버지에게도 아이가 하나 있습니다만 이 아이는 당신의 형제나 자매가 아닙니다. 그렇다면 이 아이는 누구겠습니까?"
토니 블레어는 곧장 대답했다. "그 아이는 바로 '저'입니다, 폐하."
워싱턴으로 귀국하자마자, 부시 대통령은 상원 원내대표를 테스트해보는 것이 좋겠다고 생각했다. 그는 트렌트 롯(Trent Lott) 상원의원을 백악관으로 초청한 뒤 물었다.
"롯 상원의원님, 질문 한가지를 하려고 하는데 답해주실 수 있는지요."
"물론이죠 각하. 무슨 질문이십니까?"
"어... 당신의 어머니에게 아이가 하나 있고, 당신의 아버지에게도 아이가 하나 있는데 이 아이는 당신의 형제나 자매가 아닙니다. 이 아이는 누굽니까?"
"생각 좀 해 보고 나중에 답변드려도 되겠습니까?"
부시는 그러라고 대답했고, 롯은 자리를 떴다.
롯은 곧장 동료 공화당 상원의원들을 소집하였고, 함께 이 문제에 대해 몇 시간동안 고민했지만 아무도 답을 내지 못했다.
결국, 거의 자포자기의 수준으로 롯은 장관실의 콜린 파월(*전 국무장관)에게 전화를 하여 이 문제를 설명했다.
"자, 여기보시게. 당신의 모친께 아이가 하나 있고, 당신의 부친께도 애가 하나 있어. 근데 이 아이는 당신의 형제나 자매가 아니란 말이지. 그럼 이 애는 누구일까?"
파월은 곧장 대답했다. "당연히 그건 '나' 잖아요."
크게 안도한 롯은 곧장 백악관으로 달려가 소리질렀다.
"각하!! 정답을 찾았습니다!!! 그 아이가 누군지 알아냈습니다!! 그 아이는 콜린 파월입니다!!!"
그러자 부시는 역겹다는 말투로 그를 향해 내뱉었다.
"아니잖아 이 멍청아!! 그 애는 토니 블레어야!!"
