오늘의 유용한 표현들...
1) To catch a movie=영화를 보다
해설
Catch는 "~을 잡다"의 뜻도 있지만 "~을 보다"의 뜻도 있다는 것을 기억한다.
예제
I have to go home now because I want to catch the Yankees game at 10pm.
=난 10시에 하는 양키스(야구) 게임을 봐야하기 때문에 지금 집에 가야한다.

To see (a movie)
To go to the movies=여기서 "to the movies"는 "영화관"을 가르킨다.
위의 세가지 예 모두다 "영화를 보다"라는 뜻으로 사용된다. "보다"라는 동사 바로
앞에 "go"를 사용하면 "보러가다"라는 뜻으로 사용된다.
예제
Let's go watch=go grab=go see a movie=영화 보러가자
뉘앙스 차이
"watch movies"라 할 경우 "집에서 영화를 보다"라는 뜻에 가깝고
"go to the movies"라 하면 영화관에서 영화를 보다라는 뜻에 가깝다.
하지만 그렇다고 전혀 "watch a movie/movies"를 사용하지 않는것은 아니다.
뜻은 다르지만...
친구나 나한테 "너 지금 시간있냐?"고 물었는데 내가 바쁜일이 있어서 "지금 좀 시간이 그렇네" 또는 "않되겠는데..." "타이밍이 안좋다" 라고 말 할때 이 표현을 많이 쓴다.

a) Did I catch you at a bad time, jd?
b) Yah, Phil, you did...I'm busy now.
2) What's playing?=영화 뭐해/무슨 영화 나와?
해설
"영화 뭐해"라고 물어 볼때는 동사 원형이 아닌 진행형을 사용한다.

티비에서 중계해 주는 축구 경기를 동생이 보고 있는데 내가 "누구랑 누구 경기하는거야?" 또는
"어느 팀 경기야?"라고 물을 때 위의 표현들을 사용할 수 있다. 여기서도 마찬가지로 동사
진행형이 사용되고 있다.
3) Dying to...=죽도록/엄청/정말로...
예제
I'm dying to see my boyfriend/girlfriend
I'm dying to get a puppy
4) Super+형용사=엄청/짱~하다
해설
보통 "Super"를 형용사 앞에 사용하여 단어의 뜻을 강조 할때 사용한다. 그냥 쉽게
"Super-man"을 연상해 보면 대충 "Super"가 어떤 뜻을 갖고 있는지 쉽게 알 수
있을 것이다.

Super를 사용하여 위와 같이 단어를 조합할 경우 구어적인 표현이 된다는 것을 기억해 둔다
5) Bring vs Take
뉘앙스
우리가 일반적으로 알고 있는 "Bring"의 뜻은 "가져오다/데려오다"이고 Take의 뜻은
"가져가다/데려가다"이다. "Bring"은 말하고 있는 사람이 어떤 특정한 장소에 (가)있을 때
그 장소에 무언가를 가져올때 "Bring"을 사용하는 것이다.
문법적으로 따져봤을 때 "Take"이 와야 하는 곳에 "Bring"을 잘 못 사용하는 경우도 굉장히 많지만 일상 생활에서 대화시에는 별로 문법적인 면은 문제삼지 않기 때문에 두 단어가 서로어떻게 (잘못/제대로) 사용되는지 알아두면 대화할때 도움 될 것이다.
문법적으로는 틀리지만 흔히 "Bring"을 사용하는 경우는 다음과 같다
What are you bringing to XXX's party?
Who are you brining to XXX's party?
When you go to the meeting next Monday, please bring your notebook!
I will bring my dog with me when I travel to Korea.
6) Kick it=(슬랭)놀다/뭔가를 하다

7) One of these days...=조만간
비슷한 단어

위의 "비슷한 단어"에 나와 있는 단어들도 일상적으로 많이 사용되지만 적어도 내가
생각하기에는 "One of these days"가 좀더 구어적인 표현이라 생각된다.
예제
I'll have to go get a hair-cut one of these days
We'll have to hang out with Paul one of these days
We'll catch that "the departed" one of these days
8) What he's up to=뭐 하는지/뭐 하고 있는지
비슷한 단어

ex) (i'll call XXX and see) What he's doing

9) A day off=쉬는 날
예제
I have a day off tomorrow
I got a day off today
10) You bet I am=당연하지
해설
Bet은 "~에 걸다/내기하다"라는 의미로 여기서는 "내가 심각하다는데에 내기 걸어도 좋다"로 해석할 수 있다. 이 말을 풀어 써 보면 한 마디로 "당연하다"가 된다. :)
예제
1)
a) Are you serious that you are quitting your job?
b) You bet i am (serious)
2) 고맙다고 말 하면 상대방이 나 한테 "you bet"으로 대답하기도 한다. 여기서는 "당연하지"라고 해석하지 말고 "응" 또는 "아니 뭘..." 등으로 해석하도록 하자.
a) Thank you very much~!
b) You bet!
