존은 어느날 아내 신시아와 약간의 언쟁을 벌인 후 침대에 누워 잠을 청하려고 했다. 그런데 그 때 'Pools of sorrow, waves of joy' 라는 말이 떠올랐다. 그 말은 잠에서 깨어날 때까지 머릿속에 또렷이 남아있었다. 존은 일어나고 싶지 않았지만 더 이상 잠을 잘 수가 없었기 때문에 침대에서 일어나 뇌리에 남아있는 그 말들을 적어가기 시작했다. 존은 훗날 이 곡을 평가할 때 자신이 만든 비틀즈 노래 중 마음에 드는 몇 곡 중의 하나라고 자신 있게 평했다.
