"베를린 천사의 시(Der Himmel Ueber Berlin)"의 할리우드 리메이크작
"씨티오브엔젤스."
예상대로 영화는 평론단의 (어마어마한) 지탄을 받았지만,
- 왜 그들은 유독 맥라이언에게 분노하는 것일까-
나는 외려 원작보다 리메이크작에 더 감동했더랬다.
(영화적 완성도를 떠나 한국인 관객의 입장에서
독일어는 너무 쇳소리가 나고,
내겐 그 쇳소리의 틈바구니에서 감동을 느끼는 것은 버거운 일이다)
아무도 발견하지 못한 사실인 듯하지만
Seth라는 남자 이름이
인기를 얻기 시작한 것도 이 영화를 통해서였고,
- 모성애를 자극하는 Nicolas Cage의 이름을 들은
Meg Ryan의 반응
"Seth..what kind of a name is that?"
그러나 몇 년 뒤,
The O.C.의 Seth를 비롯,
많은 훈남들의 이름이 되었다는 거-
이 영화는 Iris, In the Arms of an Angel등
많은 명곡을 배출했다.
단지 지금까지 의아한 것은,
당시 고작 고 1 - 영화보다는 H.O.T.의 토니에게 더 관심이 많았던 -
이었던 내가 도대체 이 영화의 어떤 부분에 그리도 매료됐던 것일까.
"아마도 음악의 힘이었을 거야" 하고 생각하지만,
어쩌면 파동이 미약할 지언정
그때부터 지니고 있었던 예지력 때문일 수도 있다.
원하는 것을 얻는 순간
그것이 부서져 버릴 것이라는 예감.
그럼에도 불구하고,
나는 늘 "그것"을 손에 넣기 위해
발버둥칠 운명을 타고났다는 예감.
참으로 많은 생각이 드는 요즘이다.
(뭐, 새삼스럽지는 않지만)
원했던 것이 내 손 안에서 부서졌을 때,
그것을 이어붙이는 편이 빠를까,
새로운 소유의 대상을 찾아나서는 편이 빠를까.
나도 Seth처럼 바다 속으로 한 번 첨벙하면
다 포기하고 행복해질 수 있으려나..
