제인에어 & Mr.Rochester (로체스터경)

마리아 & 트랩 대령

DVD를 정리하다가 을 다시 보게 되었는데...
근래, 제인에어를 다시 정독하게 된 것 때문인지, 새삼 가 "제인 에어"랑 많이 닮았다는 것.
물론 트랩 대령에게는 Mr.Rochester와는 달리, 어둡고 복잡한 과거는 갖고 있지 않지만 말이다.

특히, 사랑 고백을 하게 되는 계기와 그 분위기가 참 많이 비슷하다.
1. 한 동안 두 사람이 떨어져있었다. (--> 이때 남자가 사랑을 깨닫는다)
2. 연정을 품은 순수한 여인, 남자의 결혼 소식에 절망한다.
3. 남자는 자신의 결혼 소문을 마치 사실인냥, 여인에게 젠체하여 여인이 은근 먼저 사랑 고백을 하도록 조장한다.
4. 아, 장소도 유사하다. 저녁에 큰 나무 아래...(정원에서)

One midsummer evening, Adele and I had returned from berry picking in a nearby lane.
Exhausted, Adele had already gone upstairs to bed.
I remained in the garden, enjoying the summer evening. Suddenly, I heard a familiar voice.

"Jane, Thornfield is a pleasant place in the summer, isn't it?  You must be sorry to leave it."

"Must I, sir?"

"I am afraid you must, Jane. I will be wedded in a month.
 And I have found a job for you, in Ireland."

"It is a long distance, sir."

"Don't worry. We have been good friends, haven't we, Jane?"

"Yes, sir."

"I suppose you would forget me, now that you are to leave."

"I could never do that, sir."  After saying this, I started crying.

"I love Thornfield. I love it because it is the only place whre I have not felt crushed and badly treated. And hrer, I have known you, Mr.Rochester.  And I find it unbearable to leave you now.
 But it must be done."

"Why must it be done?"

"Because you are soon to be married."

"But I have no briede."

"Yes, you do, Miss.Ingram of Ingram Park."

"I will have a bride, but not Miss.Ingram."  He looked determined.

"I shall go!"  I said with passion.

"Do you think I cand stay to become nothing to you?
 Do you thing that, just because I am poor, young and plain, I hanve no feelings?
 You think wrong! Infront of God, we would both be equal!"

"Yes, we are, Jane!" He said as he embraced me.

"Jane, I offer you my hand and my heart. I wish you to marry me."

I was silent, thinking he was making fun of me.

"Do you not trust me, Jane?"

"Not a bit, sir."

"Do I seem like a liar to you?" He asked passionately.

" I will make you believe! I have no love for Miss.Ingram, nor did she for me!
 All she wanted was my fortune! I was just trying to make you jealous.
 It is you, as poor and plain as you are, you that I love!  I beg you to take me as your husband."

I started to believe him and his sincerity.

"Do you truly love me?  Do you really wish for me to be your wife?"

"Yes, I do. I swear it."

"Then, sir, I will marry you."

"Edward, call me Edward, my dear little wife!"

"Dear Edward!"

He held me in his arms and said, "Make me my happiness, and I will make yours. We shall love for a long time."

Then he added, "God forgice me, I have her, and will hold her."

Suddenly, the calm evening started to darken, and it started to rain and thunder.

We rushed inside.

He was taking off my shawl in the hall, and shaking the water out of my loosened hair.

"Hurry uo and take off your wet clothes,"  he said, "and before you go, good-night, my darling!"
He kissed me repeatedly.
