내가 본 가장 깨끗하고 순수한 지구의 시간이 고스란히 남아있는 그곳.
이 전시에서 나는 지구영토에서 조용히 사라져가는(실은 점유되어가는) 장소성에 대한 이야기를 하고자 한다. 그것은 때로 역사 속에서 권력에 의해 사라진 왜곡된 공간이거나 혹은 ‘남극풍경’처럼 개발과 과학 연구라는 목적에 가리워진 생태 파괴적인 장소이다.
이제 인간의 손길이 쉽게 닿지 않는 곳은 어디에도 없으며, 극지 또한 예외일 수 없다.
에너지와 지구환경 연구는 기초과학의 도전이라는 프로퍼갠더(Propaganda)로 개발 사업이 진행 중이며, 각 나라의 과학 기술이 자존심과 푯대로 연결되는 경쟁적인 공간으로 모습을 바꾸고 있다.
자국의 고유한 ‘기지’가 없는 국가는 남극 조약에서 회원국으로서의 발언권이 없기에, 21세기의 신대륙과 에너지 확보에서 우선순위가 박탈된다는 위기감에서 각국의 연구와 기지 건설은 무척 활발하다.
점점 녹아가는 극지.
마지막 남은 신대륙.
정복이라는 인간욕망의 새로운 대상이 되어 점점 뜨거워져만 가는 지극히 하얗고 차가운 공간. 이번 전시 에서 나는 국경 없는 영토, 극지에서 벌어지는 각국의 영역 확보를 위한 행위들을 애니메이션 시뮬레이션(simulation)과 파노라마 형식의 'Real-3D' 입체영상 설치로 재현한다.
남극여행의 기억은 3개의 애니메이션비디오 연작(Trilogy)으로 재생되고, 녹아가는 빙산, 높아지는 수면, 하얀 빙판대륙에 끊임없이 철제 컨테이너 박스를 날라대는 헬기와 시속 30km의 느린 트랙터 행렬이 이어진다. 조디악 보트를 타고 하는 항해는 더 이상 고요할 수만은 없고 빠르게 움직이는 연필로 그린 파도 물결처럼 불안하기만 하다. 이렇게 리노베이션(renovation)되어가는 남극의 풍경은 인간 행위에 내재되어있는 테리토리즘(territorism)의 욕망을 드러낸다. 그러나 나 역시 이 프로젝트를 위해서는 공격적인 활동의 한 형태로써만이 이 공간에 비집고 들어갈 수 있었다는 것, 이 또한 아이러니임을 인정할 수밖에 없다.

The Antarctic is the cleanest and the most pure place on the earth that I have ever seen. This place has a record of the history of the earth. I would like to talk about the place that is disappearing from the earth (or, in fact, that is being occupied by humans) with my art.
It might be a distorted space, which is erased from history by authority or a destructed place in which nature is destructed for scientific research and industrial development like ‘ The Antarctic landscape’.
There is no place where humans cannot reach on the earth and the Antarctic is not an exception from it. The Antarctic has been ‘developed’ with propaganda, called ‘oil-hunt operation and ecological research on the earth’. This area has become a competitive space where many nations build signposts to signify their pride in their scientific technology. No nation has any right to join the Antarctic treaty that guarantees a right for the land without having its own base in the Antarctic. Because of the desire for a land and the deposit of energy in the new continent, Antarctica, construction and scientific research by many nations are extremely active in the area.
The last continent where humans haven’t reached is gradually melting. This cold and white Antarctica, the last new continent, has become a disputed territory to be conquered by humans. presents an animation simulation about territorial expansion occurring in the Antarctic, which has no border lines yet. This exhibition used a panoramic ‘Real-3D Simulation’ to show the ‘territorism’ occurring in the Antarctic. My memories of the Antarctic are embodied in this animation trilogy. These animations are composed with melting icebergs, a rising sea level, helicopters that transport metal containers and a procession of tractors that slowly move at the speed of 30 kilometers per hour on the white ice land. My imaginative voyage to the Antarctic with a Zodiac boat is no longer silent and it is rather anxious as my negligently drawn pencil drawings of the waves demonstrate in the animations. The Antarctic landscape, which is getting ‘renovated’ reveals ‘territorism’ that is an internalized human desire for a territory
But, I also need to admit that my aggressive action for was the only way to be close to a part of the Antarctic and ironically it was another example of ‘territorism’ that I created. -by LiilLiil-
