난 내 진심을 말할 것이고, 그리 오래 걸리지는 않을 것이다.

 

Despite what they say graffiti is not the lowest form of art. Although you might have to creep about at night and lie to your mum it's actually one of the more honest art forms available. There is no elitism or hype, it exhibits on the best walls a town has to offer and nobody is put off by the price of admission.

그들이 뭐라 하건 간에 그래피티는 미술의 가장 수준낮은 형식이 아니다. 비록 당신은 야밤에 엉금엉금 기어가 당신의 엄마한테 거짓말을 해야할 지언정 그것은 어쨌거나 표현 가능한 예술 형식의 보다 정직한 방식 중 하나인 것이다. 그래피티에 엘리트주의나 과대 광고 따윈 없다. 그건 으레 제공받아야 할 최상의 벽에 전시를 하는 행위이며, 또한 그 누구도 입장료 때문에 관람을 포기하게 되는 일이 있을 수 없는 예술이다.

The people who run our cities don't understand graffiti because they think nothing has the right to exist unless it makes a profit, which makes their opinion worthless.

우리의 도시를 운영한다는 인간들은 그래피티를 이해하지 못한다. 그들은 이윤을 창출해내지 못하거나 그들의 의견을 별볼 일 없게 만드는 무언가가 있다면 그것은 존재할 가치조차 없다고 생각하기 때문이다.

 

They say graffiti frightens people and is symbolic of the decline in society, but graffiti is only dangerous in the mind of three types of people; politicians, advertising executives and graffiti writers.

그들은 그래피티가 사람들에게 두려움을 심어주며 그것이 곧 사회의 몰락을 나타내는 상징이라고 말한다. 하지만 그래피티는 단지 다음의 세 유형의 사람들에게만 위험할 뿐이다. 정치인, 광고회사의 중역들, 그리고 그래피티 작가들.

 

The people who truly deface our neighbourhoods are the companies that scrawl giant slogans across buildings and buses trying to make us feel inadequate unless we buy their stuff. They expect to be able to shout their message in your face from every available surface but you're never allowed to answer back. Well, they started the fight and the wall is the weapon of choice to hit them back.

정말로 우리의 주변 환경을 더 가치없는 것으로 만드는 이들은 바로 우리들로 하여금 자기네 상품을 사지 않으면 뭔가 뒤떨어진다는 생각을 들게 만드는, 건물과 버스 사이사이에 큼지막한 선전 문구들를 휘갈겨놓은 회사들이다. 가만히 보면 그들은 당신의 얼굴에 회사의 메세지를 오이쳐대지만 당신은 그것에 제대로 대답할 수 있도록 돼있진 않다. 자, 결국 그들이 싸움을 시작했고, 이젠 벽이야말로 그들에게 되받아칠 수 있는 우리의 무기이다.

 

Some people become cops because they want to make the world a better place. Some people become vandals because they want to make the world a better looking place.

어떤 사람들은 정말로 세상을 더 좋은 세상으로 만들어보려고 경찰이 된다. 또 어떤 이들은 세상을 더 보기 좋은 곳으로 만들고 싶다는 생각에 반달(파괴적 예술가)이 된다.

When I was eighteen I spent one night trying to paint 'LATE AGAIN' in big silver bubble letters on the side of a passenger train. British transport police showed up and I got ripped to shreds running away through a thorny bush. The rest of my mates made it to the car and disappeared so I spent over an hour hidden under a dumper truck with engine oil leaking all over me. As I lay there listening to the cops on the tracks I realised I had to cut my painting time in half or give up altogether. I was staring straight up at the stencilled plate on the bottom of a fuel tank when I realised I could just copy that style and make each letter three feet high.

열여덟살의 어느 날 밤, 나는 은색의 커다란 거품 모양 글씨로 열차의 승객칸 옆면에 'LATE AGAIN'이라고 그래피티를 하고 있었다. 그런데 그때 역내 경찰이 나타났고 나는 황급히 남아있는 물건들을 없애며 한쪽의 가시덤불 사이로 뛰어들었다. 다른 친구들은 차로 돌아가 사라졌고, 그래서 나는 한 시간 가량을 쓰레기 트럭 아래에서 줄줄 새는 엔진 오일을 맞으며 숨어있어야만 했다. 나는 그곳에 누운 채로 경찰들이 열차 선로 위를 뛰어다니는 소리를 들으며 생각했다. 그림 그리는 시간을 반으로 줄이지 못한다면 모든 걸 포기해야 할 거라고. 그런데 그때 나는 눈 앞에 보이는 연료 탱크의 아랫부분에 스텐실로 찍힌 표찰을 가만히 보고 있었고, 문득 바로 저 스타일을 카피해서 3피트짜리 글자를 만들어야겠다고 생각했다.

 

I got home at last and crawled into bed next to my girlfriend. I told her I'd had an epiphany that night and she told me to stop taking that drug 'cos it's bad for your heart.

나는 결국 집으로 와서 침대로 기어 들어가 여자친구 옆에 누웠다. 난 그녀에게 그날밤 일종의 에피파니(현현)같은 걸 느꼈다고 말했고, 그녀는 내게 그 마약은 내 심장에 안좋을 거라며 그만 하라고 말했다.

Policemen and security guards wear hats with a peak that comes down low over their eyes for psychological reasons. Apparently eyebrows are very expressive and by covering them up you appear a lot more authoritative.

경찰이나 보안 근위대는 심리적인 이유로 그들의 눈 바로 위까지 내려오는 챙 있는 모자를 쓴다. 이것은 눈썹이 가지는 풍부한 표현의 효과를 없애버림으로써 그들이 더욱 권위적으로 보이게 만든다.

 

The upside is this means it's harder for cops to see anything more than six foot off the ground and makes painting rooftops and bridges a lot easier.

위 내용이 뜻하는 바는 즉, 경찰은 땅으로부터 6피트 위로는 좀처럼 보지 못한다는 것이며, 이는 곧 지붕이나 다리에 그림을 그리기가 훨씬 쉽다는 말이기도 하다.

Imagine a city where graffiti wasn't illegal, a city where everybody could draw wherever they liked. Where every street was awash with a million colours and little phrases. Where standing at a bus stop was never boring. A city that felt like a party where everyone was invited, not just the estate agents and barons of big business. Imagine a city like that and stop leaning against the wall - it's wet.

그래피티가 불법이지 않은 도시를 상상해보라. 모두가 어디에든 자신이 좋아하는 곳에 그림을 그릴 수 있는 도시를. 모든 거리가 수백만 가지 색깔과 짧은 문구들로 꽉 채워진 도시를. 버스 정류장에서도 결코 지루하지 않고, 비즈니스계의 부동산 관리인이나 귀족들만이 아닌 모든 사람들이 초대받은 파티에 온 것 같은 도시를. 그리고 그런 도시를 상상해보며 벽에 기대지는 말길. 젖었을 수도 있으니까.

Segregation Wall, Palestine

Palestine has been occupied by the Israeli army since 1967. In 2002 the Israeli government began building a wall separating the occupied territories from Israel, much of it illegal under international law. It is controlled by a series of checkpoints and observation towers, stands three times the height of the Berlin wall and will eventually run for over 700km - the distance from London to Zurich. Palestine is now the world's largest open-air prison and the ultimate activity holiday destination for graffiti artists.

팔레스타인은 1967년 이후로 이스라엘 군에 의해 지금까지 점령된 상태다. 2002년, 이스라엘 정부는 국제법에 거의 위배됨에도 불구하고 그들이 점령한 지역과 이스라엘을 분리시키는 벽을 짓기 시작했다. 그 벽은 길게 늘어선 검문소와 관측탑이 통제하고 있는데, 높이만 베를린 장벽의 3배에 달하며 거리는 런던부터 취리히까지의 거리, 대략 700km나 된다. 결국 팔레스타인은 현재 세계에서 가장 큰, 천장만 없는 감옥인 셈이다. 그래서 한편으로 이 벽은 그래피티 아티스트들에겐 궁극의 그림그리기 활동 지역이기도 하다.

Art is not like other culture because its success is not made by its audience. The public fill concert halls and cinemas every day, we read novels by the millions and buy records by the billions. We the people, affect the making and the quality of most of our culture, but not our art.

The Art we look at is made by only a select few. A small group create, promote, purchase, exhibit and decide the success of Art. Only a few hundred people in the world have any real say. When you go to an Art gallery you are simply a tourist looking at the trophy cabinet of a few millionaires.

미술은 다른 문화 형식들과는 다르다. 미술의 성공 여부는 다수의 청중에 의해 결정되는 것이 아니기 때문이다. 콘서트 홀과 극장은 늘 사람들로 꽉 차고, 수백만이 소설을 읽으며 수천만이 레코드를 산다. 그래서 우리 일반 대중은 그러한 문화 대부분의 질을 결정하는데 영향을 준다. 하지만 미술은 아니다.

우리가 접하는 미술은 몇몇 선택된 소수의 사람들이 의해 만들어질 뿐이다. 하나의 작은 그룹이 작품을 만들고 알리며 구매하고 전시까지 한다. 심지어 작품의 성공 여부까지 결정한다. 단지 세계의 수백여명만이 미술에 대해 언급할 수 있다. 당신이 미술 작품이 전시된 갤러리에 간다면 당신은 그저 몇몇 백만장자의 트로피 진열대를 구경하는 관광객일 뿐이다.

We can't do anything to change the world until capitalism crumbles. In the meantime we should all go shopping to console ourselves.

우리가 세상을 변화시키기 위해 무언가를 하기 위해선 결국 자본주의가 끝장나야 할 것이다. 그때까지 우리는 자신을 위로하기 위해 쇼핑을 가야할 테니 말이다.

Advice on painting with stencils

스텐실로 그래피티 하기에 대한 조언

- It's always easier to get forgiveness than permission.

허락을 구하는 것보단 용서를 구하는 게 쉽다.

- Nothing in the world is more common than unsuccessful people with talent, leave the house before you find something worth staying in for.

재능이 있지만 성공하지 못한 사람들보다 세상에 흔한 것은 없을 것이다. 집 안에서 무언가 가치있는 걸 찾으려 하지 말고 일단 밖으로 나가라.

- A regular 400ml can of paint will give you up to 50 A4 sized stencils. This means you can become incredibly famous/unpopular in a small town virtually overnight for approximately ten pounds.

400ml의 페인트 한 통은 A4 용지 50장의 스텐실 분량까지 나올 수 있다. 그리고 이는 곧 당신이 약 10 파운드 정도로 하룻밤 사이에 작은 동네에서 엄청나게 유명해지거나, 혹은 무지하게 욕을 먹을 수 있다는 걸 뜻한다.

- Spray the paint sparingly onto the stencil from a distance of 8 inches.

스프레이는 스텐실로부터 8인치 거리에서 적당히, 아끼면서 뿌려라.

- The easiest way to become invisible is to wear a day-glo vest and carry a tiny transistor radio playing Heart FM very loudly. If questioned about the legitimacy of your painting simply complain about the hourly rate.

눈에 안띄는 가장 쉬운 방법은, 형광색 조끼를 입고 작은 라디오의 FM 볼륨을 크게 틀어놓고 다니는 것이다. 누군가가 당신의 그래피티 행위가 합법적인가를 묻는다면 그냥 시간당 임금이 너무 적다고 불평하라.

- The time of getting fame for your name on its own is over. Artwork that is only about wanting to be famous will never make you famous. Fame is a by-product of doing something else. You don't go to a restaurant and order a meal because you want to have a shit.

당신의 이름에 대한 명성을 얻기 위한 시간은 없다고 생각하라. 유명해지려고 그린 그림은 결코 당신을 유명하게 해주지 못할 것이다. 명성은 다른 무언가를 할때 얻어지는 부산물일 뿐이다. 똥을 싸려고 식당에 가서 밥을 먹지는 않는다.

 

 

- Mindless vandalism can take a bit of thought.
- Try to avoid painting in places where they still point at aeroplanes.
- Think from outside the box, collapse the box and take a fucking sharp knife to it.

- When explaining yourself to the Police its worth being as reasonable as possible. Graffiti writers are not real villains. Real villains consider the idea of breaking in someplace, not stealing anything and then leaving behind a painting of your name in four foot high letters the most retarded thing they ever heard of.

- Be aware that going on a major mission totally drunk out of your head will result in some truly spectacular artwork and at least one night in the cells.

- Crime against property is not real crime. People look at an oil painting and admire the use of brushstrokes to convey meaning. People look at a graffiti painting and admire the use of a drainpipe to gain access.
