얼마전 가수 유니에 이어 배우 정다빈까지 연예인들의 잇단 자살이 이어지면서 국내 연예계에 큰 파장을 몰고 왔는데요. 이렇게 자살로 일찍 생을 마감한 연예인들의 문제는 비단 오늘 일만은 아니라고 할 수 있습니다.

Not too long ago, singer U-nee and actress Chung Da-bin took their own lives and sent shock waves through Korea’s entertainment industry. It also became clear that the pressures and problems that drive young stars to 1)commit suicide are hardly new.

불과 2년 전, 영화배우 이은주가 극심한 우울증에 시달리다 목을 매 연예계에 큰 파문을 일으켰고요. 90년대에는 가수 김광석, 서지원, 장덕이 자살하는 사건이 있었는데요. 그런가 하면 아직도 미스터리한 사건도 있죠? 남성 2인조 댄스가수 듀스 출신의 김성재는 솔로 데뷔 첫 무대 후 숨져 팬들에게 큰 충격을 줬는데요. 당시 사인은 약물중독이었으나 여자친구에 의한 타살 시비가 있기도 했죠. 비록 증거 불충분으로 무죄가 선고되어 아직도 의문의 사건으로 남아있긴 하지만요.

Two years ago, actress Lee Eun-joo committed suicide after falling into a deep depression. The entertainment community was devastated and stunned. And in the 90s, singers Kim Gwang-suk, Suh Ji-won and Chang Duk took their own lives as well. We also have a still-unsolved mystery-that is, the death of Kim Sung-jae, former member of the two-guy dance group Deux. He died after his first performance as a solo artist, sending fans into shock. At the time, the cause of death was said to be drug addiction, but his girlfriend was also accused of foul play. She was declared innocent 2)on account of insufficient evidence, but the death remains a mystery today.

그런가 하면 해외 스타들의 자살도 적지 않은데요. 2003년엔 홍콩 영화배우 장국영이 호텔에서 투신 자살했고요. 지난 94년 권총으로 자살한 록그룹 너바나의 리더 커트 코베인과 일본의 록그룹 X재팬의 기타리스트 히데 역시 98년에 만취한 상태에서 목을 매 자살했는데요.

Star suicides are also something often seen overseas. In 2003, Hong Kong actor Leslie Cheung killed himself in a hotel. And in 1994, Kurt Cobain, leader of the rock group Nirvana, shot himself. Four years later, in 1998, Hide, guitarist for the rock group X-Japan, hung himself while drunk.
