Van gogh
Vincent planned to start an artist's community in the South of France, and when his wealthy art dealer Uncle Cent died and left Vincent money it was immediately used to refurbish the rented rooms in the yellow house in Arles.
Vincent invited Gauguin to live with him in the yellow house, and Gauguin was persuaded, not by Vincent but his brother Theo who represented Gauguin's work in the Paris galleries.
Gauguin agreed to stay with Vincent as long as Theo gave him a financial allowance. Gauguin arrived in October 1888 but it seems they did not get on well despite Vincent's great need for a companion. Gauguin left just two months later on 23 December.
When Vincent knew Gauguin was to come to his yellow house he set about preparing it for his friend. He painted many pictures which were hung on the walls of the hause and used to decorate Gauguin's room.
On the table stand two jugs of water, two bottles, two brushes.
Either side of the table stand two chairs. Some consider this pairing an anticipation of his friend's arrival, or perhaps something even deeper; his longing for companionship.
