Just 50 years ago

 

불과 50년전

They had nothing in their hands

 

그들은 모든것을 잃었습니다

Korean War was too severe for those who just

scape from the colonization by Japan

 

일본의 식민지를 막 벗어난 그들에게

전쟁은 너무도 가혹했습니다

Nobody mentionedany word of the

hope like future or even tomorrow

 

어느 누구도 미래나 내일같은 섣부른

희망의 말들을 하지 않았습니다

 

For them, tomorrow was

 

그들에게 내일이란

 

just another name of today which

they cannot assure their survival

 

생존을 장담할 수 없는 또 다른 오늘이었고

 

Little praying for their survival was

the only thing allowed to them

 

그들에게 허락된 것이라고는 생존을 위한 작은 기도 뿐이었습니다

 

There were no poorer countries

than this country

 

전 세계 어느 나라도 이 나라보다 못사는 나라는 없었습니다

 

The sense of dream for them was that

they just spend a day without starving

 

이들에게 꿈이라고는 오직 굶지 않고 하루를 넘기는 것이었으며

 

and they just want their sons and

daughter to avoid this poverty

 

이 배고픔이 대물림 되지 않기만을 바랬습니다

 

It was obvious for them that

the life was too severe

 

이들에게 삶은 너무도 가혹했고

 

and it might never astonish us even if they just

sob and give up Nonetheless they did never attemp

to run away as well as give up their presence

Though they couldn't ensure better tomorrow they

just wish the tomorrow of their sons and daughters

 

이들이 곧 주저앉아 삶을 포기했다 해도 전혀 놀랍지 않을 것입니다

하지만 그들은 결코 포기하거나 도망가지 않았습니다 비록 자신들에게는

내일이 없을지라도 자식들에게 있을 내일을기도했습니다

 

Officially enrolled countries in UN were around 120 at that

moment and the GNP(GNI) of the Republic of Korea was

only 76 USD in comparison with 220 USD of Thailand and

170 USD of Philippines the second poorest country in the

world was Korea

 

당시 유엔에 등록된 나라는 모두 120여 개국 한국의 국민소득은 태국이 220불 필리핀이 170불인데비해 고작 76불에 지나지 않았습니다

 

In 1962, Korea succeeded in borrowing loan as much as

140 million DMK from West Germany similarily divided country, against the interruption of the US

 

인도 다음으로 못사는 나라가 바로 대한민국 이었습니다 1962년 한국은 미국의 방해를 무릅쓰고 같은 분단국인 서독에서 1억 4천만 마르크의 차관을 얻는데 겨우 성공했습니다

 

On contion of sending nurses and miners whom West germany required and setting their salary as a mortgage

 

서독이 필요로 하는 간호사와 광부를 보내주고 그들의 봉급은

차관의 담보로 잡혔습니다

 

Before Germany admitted the ability of young korean nurses

what they firstly did was to clean dead bodies with

a gauze with alcohol

 

낯선 땅 서독으로 간 어린 간호사들이 실력을 인정받기전

맨 처음 한 일은 거즈에 알코올을 묻혀 딱딱하게 굳어버린

시체들을 이리저리 굴리며 닦는 것이었습니다

 

Miners worked extremely hard as they endured

serious heats of the earth in the mine caves under

a thousand meter deep

 

광부들은 지하 천 미터 이상의 깊은 땅속에서 뜨거운 지열을

참으며 죽어라 일했습니다

 

President of West Germany was moved by korean workers

how hard they work and he invited President of Korea to Germany

Many korean workers got together to see their president

 

이들이 너무 열심히 일하는 모습에 감동하여 서독은

한국대통령을 초청하였고 고국의 대통령을 보기위해

한국인들이 강당에 모였습니다

 

They began singing their national anthem prior to

the presidential speech However they couldn't finish singing

because they couldn't stop whimpering

Korean president put his prepared speech into his pocket

and said the same sentence repeatedly

 

연설에 앞서 애국가를 부르던 사람들은 목이 메어 끝까지 노래를

부를수 없었습니다 대통령은 준비해간 연설문을 접고 같은

말을 되풀이 하여 외쳤습니다

 

Let's work harder and harder

Let's work much harder not to make

our sons and daughters sold to foreign countries

 

우리 열심히 일합시다 우리 후손들만큼은

결단코 타국에 팔려 나오지 않도록 우리 열심히 일 합시다

 

Miners appeal to German president in vain for help

"Please help our counry, please help our president

We can do anything"

 

무슨일이든 하겠습니다 광부들은 서독 대통령에서 큰절을

올리며 울면서 부탁했습니다

우리나라를 좀 도와주십시오

우리 대통령을 도와주십시오

 

Korean president ceaselessly sobbed in the car going

back to the accomodation as letting crying miners and nurses

 

목놓아 우는 광부 간호사들을 두고 호텔로 돌아가는

차안에서 대통령은 하염없이 눈물을 흘렸습니다

 

German president gave him a handkerchief to soothe

him and promised We help you, our people help your country

 

뤼브케 서독 대통령은 손수건을 꺼내주며 위로했습니다

우리가 돕겠습니다 서독 국민이 돕겠습니다

 

Modernization of Korea was initiated by the sacrifice

and tears of these nurses and miners

 

그렇게 한국의 근대화는 서독의 파견된 간호사와 광부들로부터

시작되었습니다

Sending troops to Vietnam war was being the catalyst

to accelerate economic development

 

월남전 파병은 한국 경제 희생의 기폭제가 되었고

Expressways could be constructed with the help of sent

soldiers combat allowance

 

참전 용사들의 전투수당으로 고속도로가 건설되었습니다 

and there were being the artery of our country

 

대한민국의 동맥이 힘차게 흐르기 시작했습니다

Construction workers dispatched to desserts

in middle east made extensive efforts to earn more

dollors in every day and night

 

태앙이 작열하는 사막의 중동 건설 현장에서도 피 같은 눈물과

땀을 흘리며 밤낮으로 달러를 벌어들였습니다

 

Young girls worked hard in wag, sewing, fabric and

shoe factories producing exports while they

eat only instant ramen in a bid to supplement

their younger tuition

 

어린 소녀들은 가발 공장 봉제 공장 신발공장 선유 공장에서

라면으로 끼니를 때우며 수출 상품을 만들며

어린 동생들의 학비를 벌었습니다

 

and we eventually achived democracy

 

그리고 우리는 민주화를 이루어 냈습니다

 

Year 1950 and 50 years later, My country, Korea has

기적을 믿으십니까?

I would love to tell you it is the miracle

 

저는 감히 이것이 바로 기적이라고 말하고 싶습니다

Someone often ask

 

어떤 이들은 묻습니다

why koreans are so proud of their unity nation and place hugh importance on the patriotism

 

한국인들은 왜 그토록 한민족임을 자랑스러워하고 왜 그리고

 

애국심을 중요하게 생각하냐고

 

Rather, I want to ask them

 

나는 오히려 그들에게 묻고 싶습니다

how you are not proud of this country Just overcoming the poverty can't be the answer

 

어떻게 이런 민족을 자랑스러워 하지 않을수 있냐고 단지 가난을 벗어났기에 우리들을 자랑스러워 하는 것은 아닙니다

In Korea and our hearts there has been 'noble spirit' representing our hopes which the painful history

along our blood vessels never happens again to others Our today can exist on the basis of such noble

spirit in Korea

 

우리의 혈관을 타고 흐르는 흐르는 가슴 아픈 역사가 다른 이들에게는

반복되지 않기를 바라는 고귀한 마음들 대한민국에는 그렇게 고귀한 정신이 있었기에 오늘이 있을 수 있었습니다

 

Now, we promise that we will hand over a good country to our sons and daughters

 

이제 우리는 약속합니다 우리의 아이들에게 좋은 나라를 물려주겠다고

 

we will give you the country worthy to be proud of as well

 

너희들 또한 충분히 자랑스러워 할 만한 그런 나라를 만들어 주겠다고
