1924년 미국 Newark 태생으로 Apollo Theatre의 아마츄어

콘테스트에서 입상한 것을 계기로 Earl Hines의 빅밴드에

보컬리스트로 고용, 43년부터 2년간 활동하게 되며

이름을 알리기 시작한다.

 

재즈 3대 디바 중 1인으로 불리며
'오즈의 마법사(The Wizard of Oz)'에서 
Judy Garland가 불러서 크게 히트시킨 'Over The Rainbow'

 

49년 Columbia와의 계약 후 나온 'Sassy' 같은  히트곡들로

인해 인기가수로 자리를 다졌으며 50년대 중반을 넘어서면서

부터는 Mercury와 계약을 맺어 Clifford Brown등과 함께 팝

계열의 앨범을 주로 발표했다.
