시의 의미는 내 꿈을 밟지 말라는 의미가 아니라

절대자에게 바칠 수 있는 것이라곤 꿈 밖에 없지만

이것이라도 발 디디는 곳에 깔아드리고 싶다는

한없는 존경심을 표현한 것입니다.

He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven


Had I the heaven's embroidered cloths

Enwrought with golden and silver light

The blue and the dim and the dark cloths

Of night and light and the half-light,

I would spread the cloths under your feet:

But I, being poor, have only my dreams;

I have spread my dreams under your feet;

Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

하늘의 천



내게 금빛과 은빛으로 짠

하늘의 천이 있다면,

어둠과 빛과 어스름으로 수놓은

파랗고 희뿌옇고 검은 천이 있다면,

그 천을 그대 발 밑에 깔아드리련만

나는 가난하여 가진 것이 꿈뿐이라

내 꿈을 그대 발 밑에 깔았습니다.

사뿐히 밟으소서, 그대 밟는 것 내 꿈이오니.
