Inside the 'Friends' Finale
January 28, 2004
The "Friends" finale was an emotional one, as the gang of six celebrated the final day of taping on the Must-See TV series with their friends, family and co-stars.
"We're like very delicate china right now, and we're speeding towards a brick wall, inevitable pain," JENNIFER ANISTON says. "It's just absolutely painful in the weirdest way, because it's the most fun and joyful place to be, and it's so hard to leave that, you know?"
While production wrapped for the day, SISTER SLEDGE's "We Are Family" played as cast and crew said goodbye. COURTENEY COX's proud hubby DAVID ARQUETTE, and co-stars AISHA TYLER and HANK AZARIA were among the invitation-only audience.
But Aniston's other half and "Friends" guest star BRAD PITT couldn't attend, because he was taping 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' with ANGELINA JOLIE across town.
The final "Friends" episode will air on Thursday, May 6, as part of a two-hour finale special. An hourlong retrospective of classic moments will precede the one-hour series finale. The fun begins at the regular time -- 8 p.m. And later that night, the cast will continue the celebration on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," which will be broadcast from the Central Perk set, instead of Jay's usual studio location.
As for what the finale brings, DAVID SCHWIMMER sums it up for the six-pack, saying, "I can't divulge where we're going, but it's exactly what I'd hoped. We all end up with a sense of a new beginning. And the audience has the sense that it's a new chapter for all of these characters and a positive step forward for all."
On the more personal side, MATT LeBLANC, who will be returning to NBC in the fall in his own spinoff, "Joey," says, "It feels bittersweet. I think we're all looking around thinking we took for granted how much time we got to spend together, and to see each other as much, we're going to have to make appointments and plans. And that stinks, right? It's just really sad, and a hard thing to articulate. For me, it's almost a third of my life. It's a chapter closing."
"I'm starting a family," volunteers Cox. "I'm pregnant. So it's good timing for me because I'll have something to put my focus onto, because I can't imagine my life without these people."
"It's a deeper loss than I was expecting," adds LISA KUDROW. "I knew we would be sad when the time came. Ugh. And for me, it just hit me over the head. It feels like a really deep, deep-down loss."
And last but not least, MATTHEW PERRY comments, "For me, it's very odd. Fifty percent of me feels that it's the right time to be closing this. It's time for me personally to get back on my figure skates. (laughs) And the other 50 percent of me is exactly what everybody has been saying. It's been more than a show. It's been a wonderful support group. It's a group of people that love each other."
