로맨틱 발라드의 대표적 그룹인 AIR SUPPLY 는 1976년 결성 초기에는 현재 AIR SUPPLY의 주축을 이루고 있는 Graham Russell 과 Russell Hitchcock 의 듀오로 시작 하였다.
따라서 , 오늘날 AIR SUPPLY의 팝 밴드로서의 성공 또한 이 두사람의 재능과 불굴의 투지로 이루어졌다고 하여도 과언이 아니다.
Russell Hitchcock은 그의 3 과1/2 옥타브의 목소리로 유명 해졌으며 , 이 목소리는 그를 일약 세계적인 스타로 끌어올렸다. Russell은 가정이 매우 가난하여 15세때부터 노동을 하였다.
그러나, 우울한 환경 속에서도 음악은그에게 단하나의 즐거움이였다. 그의 누나는 Russell 에게 그가 가장 좋아하는 Beatles뿐만 아니라, Tony Benett나 Frank Sinatra같은 저음의 감상적인 가수들의 레코드를 자주 들려주어 그의 음악성을 북돋아 주었다.
그 후 싱가폴인들로 구성된 밴드에서 노래를 하다가 20세때 그는 노래 하는 것을 포기하였다.
