켈리 클락슨(Kelly Clarkson)은 2002년 여름, 팝 스타 등용문인 폭스 TV의 첫 번째 ‘American Idol’에서 우승하면서 팝계에 데뷔한 뮤지션이다. 그녀는 학창시절부터 타고난 보컬실력으로 선생님들의 권유로 합창단에 가입하여 활동했고, 고등학교 졸업 후에는 극장에서 일을 하거나 음료수 회사 홍보요원과 칵테일 웨이트리스 일을 하였다. 여전히 뮤지션에 대한 꿈을 잃지 않은 그녀는 아메리칸 아이돌 프로그램에 출전하는 기회를 잡았고, 무려 10,000 대 1의 경쟁률을 뚫고 심사위원의 58%의 지지를 받아 우승하여 데뷔 앨범을 발표할 기회를 갖게 된다.
곧 그녀는 우승으로 1백만 달러의 상금을 받고 RCA와 음반 발매 계약을 맺는다. 그리고 2002년 말, 휘트니 휴스턴(Whitney Houston), 산타나(Santana)의 성공 신화를 일궈낸 프로듀서 클라이브 데이비스(Clive Davis)의 지휘아래 첫 음반 녹음에 들어간다. 이후 그녀의 행보는 그야말로 탄탄대로로 이어진다. 2003년 4월 파워풀한 팝 록 성향의 첫 앨범 [Thankful]을 발표한 직후, 앨범은 빌보드 차트 1위에 오르고, 어메리칸 아이돌의 우승곡이자 첫 싱글인 ‘A Moment Like This’ 역시 빌보드 차트 1위를 차지한다. 이러한 [Thankful] 앨범은 2백만 장이 넘는 판매고를 기록하고 캐나다 출신의 록커 에이브릴 라빈(Avril Lavigne)에 이은 새로운 여성 록 스타의 탄생을 예고했다.
2004년 11월 그녀는 두 번째 앨범 [Breakaway]를 발표한다. 전작에 이어 2집 역시 얼터너티브 메탈 그룹 에바네센스(Evanescence) 출신의 벤 무디(Ben Moody)와 데이비드 호지스(David Hodges)를 포함해 베테랑 뮤지션이 곡을 썼고, 켈리 클락슨과 총 6곡을 공동작곡한 카라 디오과르디(Kara Dioquardi)를 필두로 명 프로듀서 맥스 마틴(Max Martin), 클라이브 데이비스(Clive Davis) 등 앨범에 참여했다. 앨범은 빌보드 차트 3위로 데뷔하고 앨범 발매 전 에이브릴 라빈이 작곡하여 화제가 된 싱글 ‘Breakaway’가 빌보드 싱글 차트 6위를 기록하고 디즈니 영화 [Princess Diaries 2]에 삽입되었다. 그 밖에도 ‘Since U Been Gone’, ‘Walk Away’ 같은 히트곡들 배출하며 전작 못지 않은 성공을 거둔다. 이후에도 그는 특유의 파워풀한 보컬과 친숙한 팝 멜로디가 가미된 팝 록 스타일로 많은 팬 층을 확보하며 지속적인 활동을 이어간다.
