Build me a son, O Lord,
who will be strong enough to know when he is weak,
and brave enough to face himself when he is afraid;
one who will be proud and unbending in honest defeat,
and humble and gentle in victory.
Build me a son
whose wishbone will not be where his backbone should be;
a son who will know Thee
and that to know himself is the foundation stone of knowledge.
Lead him, I pray,
not in the path of ease and comfort,
but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenge.
Here let him learn to stand up in the storm;
here let him learn compassion for those who fail.
Build me a son whose heart will be clean,
whose goal will be high;
a son who will master himself
before he seeks to master other men;
one who will learn to laugh,
yet never forget how to weep;
one who will reach into the future,
yet never forget the past.
And after all these things are his,
add, I pray, enough of a sense of humor,
so that he may always be serious,
yet never take himself too seriously.
Give him humility,
so that he may always remember the simplicity of greatness,
the open mind of true wisdom,
the meekness of true strength.
Then I, his father, will dare to whisper,
"I have not lived in vain".


아들을 위한 기도...

약할때 자기를 잘 분별하는 힘과
두려울 때 자신을 잃지 않을 용기를 가지고
정직한 패배에 부끄러워 하지 않고 태연하며
승리에 겸손하고 온유할 수 있는 사람이 되게 하소서

그를 요행과 안락의 길로 인도하지 마시고
곤란과 고통의 길에서 항거할 줄 알게 하시고
폭풍우 속에서도 일어설 줄 알며
패한자를 불쌍히 여길줄 알도록 해주소서

그의 마음을 깨끗이 하고
목표는 높게 하시고
남을 다스리기 전에 자신을 다스리게 하시며
미래를 지향하는 동시에 과거를 잊지 않게 하소서

그 위에 유머를 알게 하시어
인생을 엄숙히 살아가면서도 삶을 즐길 줄 아는 마음과
자기 자신을 너무 드러내지 않는 겸손한 마음을 갖게 하소서

그리고 참으로 위대한 것은 소박함에 있다는 것과
참된 힘은 너그러움에 있다는 것을 항상 명심하게 하소서

그리하여 그의 아버지인 나는 헛된 인생을 살지 않았노라고
나직히 속삭이게 하소서
