The Pipe Dark Nebula

Explanation: The dark nebula predominant at the lower left of the above photograph is known as the Pipe Nebula. The dark clouds, suggestively shaped liml">Pipe Nebula. The dark clouds, suggestively shaped like smoke rising from a pipe, are caused by absorption of background starlight by dust. These dust clouds can be traced all the way to the Rho Ophiuchi nebular clouds on the right. The brightest star in the field is Antares. Many types of nebula are highlighted here: the red are emission nebula, the blue are reflection nebula, and the dark are absorption nebula. This picture has been digitally enhanced.

파이프 성운
이 사진의 좌측 아래쪽에 검게 보이고 있는 암흑성운이 파이프 성운이다. 파이프에서 연기가 피어 오르는 것처럼 보이는 이 파이프 성운은 앞쪽에 있는 먼지가 뒤에 있는 별빛을 가려서 검게 보이는 것이다. 파이프에서 나온 검은 연기는 우측에 있는 로오피우치 성운에까지 연결되어 있는 것처럼 보인다. 이 사진에서 가장 밝게 보이는 별은 안타레스이다. 이 사진에는 여러 가지 형태의 성운이 보이고 있다. 붉게 보이는 성운은 스스로 빛을 내는 발광성운이고, 푸른색으로 보이는 것은 별 빛을 받아 반사하고 있는 반사성운이며, 검게 보이는 것은 빛을 흡수하는 암흑성운이다. 이 사진은 컴퓨터를 이용하여 색깔이 강조되었다.
