 When in disgrace with fortune and men's eyes, 
 I all alone beweep my outcast state,
 And trouble deaf Heaven with my bootless cries, 
 And look upon myself, and curse my fate,
 Wishing me like to one more rich in hope, 
 Featur'd like him, like him with friends possess'd,
 Desiring this man's art, and that man's scope, 
 With what I most enjoy contented least:
 Yet in these thoughts myself almost despising, 
 Haply I think on thee,--and then my state
 Like to the lark at break of day arising 
 From sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven's gate;
 For thy sweet love remember'd such wealth brings 
 That then I scorn to change my state with kings'.

소네트 29(윌리엄 셰익스피어) 운명에 버림받고 세상사람들로 부터 사랑을 받지 못한 채 나 홀로 나의 버림받은 처지를 한탄할 때, 부질없는 아우성으로 귀먹은 하늘을 괴롭히고 내 자신을 돌아보며 나의 운명을 저주할 때, 희망으로 풍요로운 사람 같이 되기를 바라며 친구들이 많은, 그런 사람 같기를 갈망할 때, 이 사람의 기술을 탐내고 저 사람의 역량을 부러워하며 내가 가장 즐기는 것에도 만족을 느끼지 못할 때, 그러나 이러한 생각들 속에 내 자신을 거의 경멸하다가도 문득 당신을 생각하면 그 때 나의 처지는 새벽녘에 음울한 대지를 박차고 솟아오르는 종달새 같아 하늘 문가에서 찬양의 노래를 부르노라. 당신의 감미로운 사랑 떠올리면 너무도 풍요로워져 나는 내 자신의 처지를 왕과도 바꾸지 않으련다
