1994년 7월 2일 개봉된 초창기 월트디즈니 Lion King을 1997년 미국에서 뮤지컬로 재구성. 아프리카 밀림을 옮겨 놓은 듯한 기발한 무대 연출로 토니상 6개 부문을 수상하며, 미국과 영국, 일본 등에서 흥행 성공하였으나 작년부터 한국에서 1여년간 공연을 하였지만 한국 뮤지컬계에서 문화침탈을 내세우며 거센반발로 177억여원을 투자하여 36억원 적자를 내며 실패로 막을 내렸다.
벌써 라이온킹이 나온지도 10여년이 지났지만 아직까지도 디즈니 음악의 최고봉이라 불릴만하다. 한스짐머 군단의 힘을 느낄수 있었던 OST가 아닌가 싶다. 스카의 역으로 나왔던 제레미 아이언스의 목소리, 우피 골드버그의 하이에나 목소리(Be Prepared)가 아직도 귀에 생생하다.
타이틀인 Circle of Life을 비롯해 품바와 티몬의 Hakuna Matata, 심바와 날라의 러브테마인 Can you feel the love tonight 등 자연의 경이로움을 느낄수 있는 곡들이 대부분이다.
사바나 원주민들의 연주에 맞춘 Elton John의 감미로운 목소리가 듣는이로 하여금 편안함을 느끼게 해주는 것은 아닐까.
