영국 런던의 떠돌이 고양이 한 마리가 대박 횡재로 ‘생애역전’을 이루게 됐다.
BBC방송 인터넷판은 6일 팅커라는 이름의 주인 없는 검은 고양이가 평소 자신을 귀여워 하던 마거릿 레인 할머니(89)로부터 집과 펀드 등 45만파운드(약 9억원) 상당의 유산을 상속받았다고 보도했다.
측량기사의 미망인으로 자식이 없던 레인 할머니의 유언장은 5일 언론에 공개됐다.
유언장에 따르면 레인 할머니는 자신이 살던 런던 북부 할로 지역의 침실이 3개 딸린 집과 2억원 상당의 펀드를 고양이에게 상속하고 이웃집 주민을 재산관리인으로 지정했다.
레인 할머니는 그러나 “내 상속자인 8살짜리 고양이가 다시 집을 뛰쳐나가 영구히 재산을 포기하는 상태가 되면 고양이 재산권과 상속관리인의 신탁 의무도 자연히 소멸된다”고 못박았다. 고양이가 21살이 되거나 사망하는 경우 상속관리인에게 재산이 귀속되도록 유언했다.
BBC는 재산관리인인 이웃집 주민 유진 휘틀리(75)의 말을 빌려 어느날 벼락부자가 된 사람들에게 주위 사람들이 몰리듯 팅커 주위에도 빌붙어사는 고양이들이 하나둘씩 늘고 있다고 전했다. 〈이상연기자〉
A stray cat has been left a large house in north London and a ￡100,000 trust fund by an elderly woman he befriended.
Tinker, who is thought to be about eight years old, made friends with Margaret Layne, 89, before she died last year.
Mrs Layne's will, which has just been published, stated that Tinker should be able to stay in the ￡350,000 house in Harrow until he dies.
Mrs Layne had no children and her estate is worth ￡585,912.

The sum of ￡100,000 was left in a trust fund to Mrs Layne's former neighbours, Ann and Eugene Wheatley, so they could maintain the house and look after Tinker.
Mr Wheatley, 75, said the couple's own two cats had chosen to move in with their wealthy friend.
"He has the run of the house, which he now shares with Lucy, who was our pussy but decided to move there after she had a litter.
"And there's Stardust, a white cat who came to us from a friend who couldn't look after him any more but chose to go and live there."
Mr Wheatley said the fall in the stock market had halved the value of the trust fund.
"There's a limit to what you can spend it on. I've done a bit of work on the house and Tinker is fond of coley, so we bought him some."
There is one catch for Tinker, though.
If he decides to leave home the trust fund will be ended and the estate will pass to the Wheatleys.
