When the Plum Village delegation led by Thich Nhat Hanh had just landed in Rome for 14 days of Public Talks, retreats and other events, the demonstration of 600 Tibetan monks on the occasion of the 49th year of the movement to oppose the yoke of Chinese rule was on its eighth day. The capital of Tibet, Lhasa, had been cut off from all outside contact by Chinese tanks, armoured cars and military. The repression by the Chinese forces was bloody and the corpses of hundreds of victims, most of whom were Tibetan youths and Buddhists, were lying everywhere on the streets.
틱낫한테이(선생님)가 이끄는 플럼빌리지 대표단이 공개대화, 명상훈련, 그리고 다른 이벤트들을 위해 14일간 로마에 도착했을 때, 중국통치의 멍에에 반해다는 49년간의 운동의 상황에 있는 600 여 티벳스님들의 데모가 그 기간의 8번째 날에 있었었다. 티벳의 수도 라싸는 중국의 탱크와 무장한 차들과 군대에 의해서 모든 외부 접경지대로부터 차단되었다. 중국군에 의한 억압은 피로 물든 것이었고 수백의 희생자들의 시체들은-그 희생자들 중 대부분은 티벳의 젊은이들과 불교신자들- 거리 어디서든지 누워있었다.
During his stay in Rome Thich Nhat Hanh was interviewed on Italian television about the situation in Tibet. Thây made two main proposals:
로마에서의 틱낫한테이가 머무르는 동안에, 그는 티벳에서의 상황에 대해서 이태리TV에서 인터뷰를 했다. 테이는 두가지 제안을 했다.
1. The European parliament should call an extraordinary meeting on the situation in Tibet and send a multi-national delegation to Lhasa and all other parts of Tibet, which have witnessed suffering due to the occupation. The delegation should listen deeply to the suffering of both sides and make a report to the countries of Europe and North America.
유럽의 국회는 티벳에 상황에 대한 임시회의를 소집하고 라싸와 모든 티벳의 다른 곳들에 다국가 대표를 보내서 그 상황으로 인한 고통을 목격해야한다. 그 대표는 양측이 겪는 고통을 깊이 경청하고 유럽과 북아메리카의 국가들에게 보고를 해야한다.
2. The European and North American countries should intervene to make it possible for H.H. Dalai Lama to visit Tibet, give teachings on the Buddhadharma and organize retreats just as Thich Nhat Hanh has been able to go back to Vietnam to teach the Dharma. If Thich Nhat Hanh has been allowed to return to Vietnam to teach, then China should allow H.H. the Dalaï Lama to go back to Tibet to teach. The people of Tibet and the Chinese people need to be in touch with the wonderful presence of H.H. Even if H.H. were only to teach the Dharma and encourage the preservation of the Tibetan culture and were to say nothing about politics, it would bring enormous happiness to the people of his homeland. If pressure from western countries enabled Thich Nhat Hanh to go back to Vietnam, then similar pressure could enable the Dalai Lama go back to Tibet.
유럽과 북아메리카 국가들이 중재하여 틱낫한테이가 베트남으로 돌아가 진리를 가르치는 것과 마찬가지로 달라이라마가 티벳을 방문하고 불교의 진리를 가르치고 명상훈련을 조직화할 수 있도록 해야한다. 만약 틱낫한테이가 베트남으로 돌아가 가르치는 것이 허용된다면 그 때 중국도 달라이라마가 티벳으로 돌아가 가르치는 것을 허용할 것이다. 티벳사람들과 중국사람들은 달라이라마의 경이로운 존재에 접촉해야할 필요가 있다. 달라이라마가 오직 진리을 가르치고 티벳의 문화의 보존하도록 용기를 붇돋우고 정치에 대해서 아무것도 얘기하지 않는다면 그의 고향사람들에게 엄청난 행복을 가져올 것이다. 서방국가들로부터의 압력으로 인해 틱낫한테이가 베트남으로 돌아갈 수 있게 된다면, 그때 동일한 압력으로 인해 달라이라마가 티벳에 돌아갈 수 있을 것이다.
During the interview, Thich Nhat Hanh also suggested that the government of Vietnam should allow the organizers of the International Wesak Celebration –due to take place in Hanoi this May- to invite H.H. Dalai Lama to attend. This would bring a great deal of happiness to Vietnamese
Buddhists and would also show that Vietnam has a very different standpoint about Tibet than does China. Thich Nhat Hanh also told Tibetan Buddhists not to give up hope because Vietnam had in the past been under Chinese rule for nearly 1000 years, but had finally been able to reclaim her independence.
인터뷰 동안에 틱낫한테이는 또한 베트남정부가 이번 오월에 하노이에서 열릴 예정인 국제 Wesak 축하제의 준비인원들이 달라이라마가 참석하도록 초대하는 것을 허용해야한다고 제안했습니다. 이것으로 인해 베트남 불교도들은 큰 행복을 누릴 것입니다. 그리고 베트남은 중국과는 달리 티벳에 대해서 매우 다른 관점을 지니고 있음을 보여줘야 합니다. 틱낫한테이는 또한 과거 베트남도 거의 1000년간 중국의 통치하에 있었으나 마침내 독립을 이끌어 냈었기 때문에 티벳 불교도들도 희망을 포기하지 말라고 말했습니다.
During a press conference of 27th March in Naples, Thich Nhat Hanh repeated what he had said to the Italian television earlier; namely that he was ready to go to Tibet with H.H. Dalai Lama to support H.H. and teach the Dharma to Tibetan Buddhists with H.H. if he was granted a visa to do so.
나폴리의 3월 27일의 기자회견동안에 틱낫한테이는 전에 이태리TV에 얘기했던 바를 반복해서 말했습니다. 즉, 그는 그렇게 하도록 비자를 받을 수 있다면 달라이라마를 지지하기 위해 달라이라마와 함께 티벳으로 가서 티벳의 불교도들에게 진리를 가르칠 준비가 되어 있다고 말입니다.
티벳의 독립은 한국의 통일만큼이나 세계인의 마음의 평화를 위해서도 필요한 일이라는 생각이 듭니다. 저 또한 티벳의 상황이 잘 해결될 수 있기를 기도해봅니다.
