로즈 피젬(4)An Israeli court on Thursday (May 19) convicted a mother and grandfather over the murder four-year-old Rose Pizem, whose body was discovered in 2008, hidden in a suitcase at the bottom of a Tel Aviv river.
4세 여아 로즈 피젬 살인 사건에 연루된 피젬의 어머니와 할아버지가 19일(이하 현지시간) 이스라엘의 한 지방법원에서 유죄를 선고받았다. 로즈 피젬의 시신은 2008년 이스라엘 서부 도시 텔아비브의 한 강바닥에서 여행용 가방에 담긴 채로 발견됐다.
Rose, who was born in Paris, disappeared in May 2008 prompting a massive search. Her body was not discovered until the following September when divers trawled the Yarkon River.
파리에서 태어난 로즈는 2008년 5월 실종됐고, 이후 대대적인 수사가 펼쳐졌다. 로즈의 시신이 그 해 9월까지 발견되지 않자, 잠수부들이 나서 야르콘 강을 샅샅이 수색했다.
On Thursday, a district court found the grandfather, Ronny Ron guilty of murder and Rose's mother, Marie-Charlotte Renault guilty of plotting the crime, according to the court's ruling.
텔아비브 인근 페타 티크바 지방법원은 19일 로즈의 할아버지인 로니 론(48)과 로즈의 엄마인 마리 샤를로트 르노(26)에게 각각 살인과 살인 모의 혐의를 적용해 유죄를 선고했다.
"Our expectation was for conviction of a crime that does not include killing," Lawyer Revital Sweid, who represents Marie-Charlotte Renault, told Reuters.

“우린 살인을 제외한 범행에 대해서만 유죄 판결을 받을 거라 예상했었다.”
Both face possible life sentences.
두 사람은 모두 종신형에 처해질 수 있다.
"It was very clear from the evidence though circumstantial evidence that this murder both of the defendants took part, the grandfather and the mother," said Ana Avidov, Deputy to the District Attorney and in charge of criminal cases.

“정황 증거이긴 하지만 두 피고인, 즉 로즈의 할아버지와 엄마가 로즈를 살해했다는 게 명확하다.”
Police investigators at the time said Ron's son and Rose's mother married as teenagers in France after their daughter was born.
경찰 수사관들은 “론의 아들(벤 피젬)과 로즈의 엄마는 10대였을 때 프랑스에서 결혼을 했고, 딸 로즈를 낳았다”고 밝혔다.

The couple visited Israel, where the mother fell in love with her Israeli father-in-law and moved in with him.
이후 둘은 (시아버지가 있는) 이스라엘을 방문했다. 그곳에서 로즈의 엄마는 시아버지와 사랑에 빠졌고, 시아버지와 함께 살기 위해 이스라엘로 이사를 했다.
The father returned to France with Rose, but her mother won a French court order for the girl to live with her and the grandfather in Israel.
로즈의 아빠는 딸과 함께 프랑스로 돌아갔다. (남편과 이혼한) 로즈의 엄마는 딸과 시아버지와 함께 이스라엘에서 살기 위해 양육권 다툼을 벌였고, 결국 재판에서 승리했다.
(경찰에 따르면, 이스라엘로 온 로즈는 히브리어를 모르는 데다 새 가정에 적응하지 못하면서 할아버지 론에게 학대를 받았다. 론은 로즈의 얼굴을 손으로 때렸는데 숨을 쉬지 않아 여행용 가방에 넣어 야르콘 강에 버린 것이라며, 고의로 살해한 것이 아니라고 주장하고 있다.)
The case shocked Israel and touched off a national debate on child abuse.
