Learning a language is hard work. Whether we’re trying to get kids to do it or learning it ourselves, it’s not an easy task.
언어를 배우는건 여간 힘든게 아닙니다. 우리의 자녀를 학습시킬때나 우리 본인을 위해 배울때나 쉽진 않은 작업이죠.
The internet provides so many options, yet many of us don’t take advantage. We end up with analysis paralysis. Too many choices, too much information, so we over-think and never take action.
We end up with questions or concerns like these:
“Are online libraries/academies good?”
“Do I have to send my son to an English academy starting from the 1st grade?”
“How early is too early, to learn English?”
인터넷에는 다양한 옵션들이 있지만, 많은 분들이 그 혜택을 누리지 못하고 있어요. 결국 정보과다로 인한 분석불능에서 끝나고 맙니다. 즉, 너무 많은 정보로 인해 분석이 불가능해지는거죠.
이와같은 질문과 고민만을 남겨둡니다:
“온라인으로 하는 도서관/학원이 좋은가요?”
“초등학교 1학년부터 영어학원에 보내야하나요?”
“영어는 언제부터 시켜야하나요?”
Online and offline academies have their advantages, and disadvantages. Some of these schools can cost a good amount of money while results can vary widely.
“I’m a working mom. Even though my daughter is attending a well-known academy, her grades aren’t going up. What do I do?”
Just because an academy is “well-known”, doesn’t mean it’s right for your child. And it doesn’t mean you are going to get the same results as that other kid.
학원이 온라인이던 오프라인이던 각자의 장점과 단점이 존재합니다. 어떤곳들은 결과가 상당히 다른 반면 비용은 적절하게 느껴질 수 있습니다.
“전 워킹맘이에요. 딸아이를 잘 알려진 학원에 보내고 있는데 성적은 오르지 않네요. 어떡해야 하죠?”
잘 알려진 학원이라고 해서 우리 아이에게 맞는 곳이라고 할 순 없습니다. 또, 다른 아이들와 같은 결과를 받을거라는 장담도 할 수 없구요.
But what if there was a different, more cost-effective way to learn English? You could do it from home and save yourself some time and money.
“But self-learning from home is too difficult.”
Yes, it does take a little more planning and motivation, but it will be better for your child in the long run. This is because they will be learning how to study on their own, how to make a habit (so it’s easier), and how to set and achieve goals.
The great news is, I’ve created the plan for you. I’ll explain the exact steps, so all you have to do, is act.

The Plan – 계획Create a habit 습관을 만들어라A habit is something we do every day, without thinking. Good habits can improve our lives while bad ones can drag us down.우리가 인지하지 않고 매일하는 무언가를 습관이라고 말합니다. 좋은 습관은 우리의 인생을 개선시켜주고 그렇지 않은 습관은 우리를 힘들게 합니다. Set an hour every day to learn English.(i.e., 30 minutes – 1 hour after they get home from school)(Doing it the same time every day helps to make the action automatic. Thus, making it easier in the long run)(If it’s hard to keep the same time on the weekends, at least do it Monday-Friday)영어학습을 위한 1시간 정하기(30분-1시간 / 방과후 집에와서)(매일 일정한 시간을 정해놓으면 자동적으로 실행시키는데 도움이 되므로 장기적으로 더 쉬운 공부자세를 만들어줍니다.) (주말에 일정한 시간을 지키기 어렵다면, 적어도 월요일부터 금요일까지는 지켜주세요.)Set specific goals.(If you just tell your child to “learn English for an hour”, they’re not going to try as hard because there is no “end point”. They’re just trying to finish up the hour. Setting a specific goal lets them know where the finish line is. GOAL: Complete 500 XP or Complete 5 levels.
i) The site won’t let you advance until the answers are correct, so kids can’t just guess. Parents just have to tell them their goal and check back periodically to see how they’re doing.
ii) You can adjust the goals to make it harder or easier, depending on how your child is doing. You don’t want to make it too hard (they’ll just give up) nor too easy. We’re looking for around 80% difficulty.

i) 듀오링고 사이트는 정답이 맞기전에는 넘어가지 않기때문에 아이들이 그저 대강 찍어선 목표에 도달할 수 없습니다. 학부모님들은 아이들에게 목표를 말해주고 어떻게 하는지 주기적으로 체크해주세요.
ii) 자녀가 보여주는 학습에 맞춰 목표를 좀더 어렵거나 쉽게 정할 수 있습니다. 너무 어려운것도 (아이들은 쉽게 포기하니) 너무 쉬운것도 좋지 않습니다. 저희는 한 80% 의 어려운정도로 맞추고 있습니다.
B. MemriseGOAL: Complete 2 levels of (name of course).
i) Search for English courses (There’s a series called 영어1, 영어2, ~ 영어7)
ii) There’s a progress bar you can check within each course that shows how far the learner has gotten.

i) Parents will need to create a Google doc or Word d0cument with the following questions:

What is 1 major problem the hero faced?
How did they solve it?
What did you learn from this story? How does it apply to your life?
ii) You might be thinking, How can I check their work if I don’t know the story myself?
iii) Be a student. You want your child to teach you about the story. Ask questions about certain events or things they tell you. You should be able to tell if your son/daughter actually read it and understood it. If they didn’t understand it, have them pick a different tale next time.

iii) 학생이 되어보세요. 우리 아이가 학부모님께 내용에 관련해서 가르쳐주길 바랍니다. 어떤 사건에 관련해서 혹은 아이가 말해주는 내용에 관련한 질문을 던져보세요. 그 질문을 통해 우리 아이가 정말 이 책을 읽었는지, 이해는 잘 하고 있는지 알 수 있습니다. 다음번에는 다는 도서를 고르게 해주세요.
These 3 examples are just the tip of the iceberg. There are so many ways to learn English online for free. It’s just a matter of actually doing it.
Many websites show progress and don’t let students advance until they learn the material.In a traditional school setting, teachers would have to move on to the next lesson, whether it was learned by everyone or not.
Use these sites (and also these other 8 great websites), set a time every day, set a specific goal, and check to see if it was completed!

In the beginning, your kids will probably complain. Maybe it’s too hard, maybe they don’t have the discipline (yet) to do it every day.
Like anything else, creating habits and learning are not easy. Especially at the start. Stick with it. Your children will stop whining after they get used to the change in behavior.
