'인종차별에 대항하는 래퍼들'의 모임이라... 자칫 과격하고 거친 입담의 메시지들이 쏟아져 나올 거라 기대했던 건 기우(奇遇)였다. '사랑의 메시지'란 부제가 뒷받침하듯 평화주의적이고 온건한 공존 노선을 펼쳐 보이고 있다 케케묵은 고전이 되어 기억 저편에나 남아 있을 법한 영화 <미션(The Mission)>의 몇 장면이 떠오른다. 가브리엘(Gabriel) 신부로 분 한 제레미 아이언스(Jeremy Irons)와 노예상 멘도자(Mendoza)로 분한 로버트 드 니로의 연기가 볼만했던 '86년 작품. 종교적인 메시지를 떠나 칼과 창을 이기는 것이 사랑과 진실임을 보여준 한 편의 휴먼 드라마이기도 했던 그 작품 말이다. 래퍼스 어겐스트 레이시즘이란 이름으로 모인 언더그라운드 래퍼들 또한 비슷한 방법론을 취하고 있다. 대결이나 반목이 아닌 화합과 용서의 메시지를 전달하기 위해 이들은 우리에게 익숙한 음악적 유산들로부터 아이디어들을 빌어와 쓰고 있다. 정통 클래식 작품 가운데 일부를 차용해 샘플링 하기도 하고 혹은 올디스 팝이라 부를 만한 것들을 옮겨오기도 했다. 퍼프 대디나 쿨리오(Coolio)로 세계적인 붐이 일기 시작한 이래 샘플링 기법은 이미 익숙한 것이 되어 버렸지만 앨범 전체를 이렇게 꾸민건 또 색다르다. 스위트박스(Sweet Box)의 경우 바흐(Bach)의 곡을 주테마로 얹는 영민함을 보여 '모든 게 다 잘 되었던(Everything's Gonna Be Alright)'것도 같은 맥락이어서 '익숙한 낯섦'으로 팝 대중을 매료시키자는 거였다. 본작은 2CD 앨범으로 만들어 졌고 첫 번째 CD에는 전체적으로 부드럽고 둥글둥글한 사운드로 다듬어 진 품위 있는 랩. 힙 합 그리고 R&B 트랙들이 17트랙 가득 하다. 바흐의 '안나 막달레나를 위하여', 모차르트의 '교향곡 40번 g단조 알레그로 몰토', 알비노니의 '아다지오' 등 학창 시절 음악 수업 시간 내지는 CF를 통해서라도 익숙할 것이 분명한 작품들이 귓가에 은은하다. '70년대 안방극장 인기 방영 외화 시리즈 의 테마곡도 'Hawaii 5.0' 속에 녹아들어 있고 'Mami Blue'의 주테마 역시 우리에게 익숙한 번안곡 '어머니'의 일부다. 삶의 방식으로써 존재하는 힙 합을 만날 좋은기회!
