이 왜소한 이탈리아 선수는 1996년 11월 첼시에 합류한 뒤 스탬퍼드브리지에서 6년 반을 지내며 클럽의 상징이 됐고 서부 런던 이외의 지역에서도 넓은 사랑을 받았다.
초년생 시절인 1980년 후반부터 1990년대 초까지 나폴리에서 뛰었던 졸라는 전설의 선수 디에고 마라도나에 비견되었다. 결국에는 나폴리에서 의 플레이메이커 자리를 계승했지만 그 공을 위대한 아르헨티나 선수에게 돌렸다.

이는 그의 파괴력과 재능에 대한 확실한 인정이었고, 그 다음 시즌인 1997년에는 첼시가 11월 더비카운티 전에서 4-0의 압승을 거두던 당시 최초의 해트트릭까지 기록했다.
이 시즌 막바지, 졸라는 첼시에 절대 잊을 수 없는 극적인 순간을 안겨주었다. 지금은 폐지된 컵위너스컵의 결승전 슈투트가르트와의 경기에서 졸라는 교체 투입되자마자 경기의 유일한 승부골을 성공시켰다.
그 후로도 1998년 12월, 올드트래포드에서 맨체스터유나이티드에게 막판 동점골을 뽑아내는 등 첼시에 있어 의미 깊은 골들을 계속해서 기록했다. 2002년 1월 노리치 시티와 가진 FA컵 재경기에서 졸라가 넣었던 골은 첼시 시절에 가장 잊을 수 없는 득점이었다. 코너에서 포스트로 달려간 졸라는 공을 가볍게 튕겨 공중으로 날린 후 그물에 적중시켰다.
스탬포드브리지에 불어 닥친 로테이션 시스템에 점점 설 자리를 잃던 졸라는 이후 한 시즌을 더 뛰고 첼시를 떠났다. 이 시스템을 처음 사용한 것은 지안루카 비알리였고 ‘팅커맨(땜장이라는 뜻)’이라는 별명을 가졌던 클라우디오 라니에리에 이어져서는 더욱 심화됐다.

그러나 졸라는 에버튼 전 4-1 승리에서 넣은 마지막 골을 포함해 2002/03 시즌 16골이라는 최고 기록을 세우며 첼시 생활을 마감했다.
2-1로 이겼던 리버풀 전에 교체 투입되며 첼시 소속 마지막 경기를 치른 뒤 무상 이적으로 이탈리아의 칼리아리로 떠났다. 졸라는 첼시 시절 312 경기에 나가 80 득점했고, 클럽 역사에 거대한 족적을 남겼다.
그가 떠나던 해, 첼시 팬들은 졸라를 첼시에서 뛰었던 가장 뛰어난 선수로 뽑았고 아직까지도 서포터들 사이에서 영웅으로 추앙 받는 존재다.

Gianfranco Zola was among the most skilful and popular foreign players to have played in the Premier League and he remains a hero with Chelsea fans.
The little Italian joined Chelsea in November 1996 and, in six-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge, became a club icon and was also loved by those not from West London.
In his early career, Zola played for Napoli in the late 1980s and early 1990s and came under the wing of the legendary Diego Maradona. He eventually took over the playmaker’s mantle from Maradona in Naples, but Zola revealed he owed a great debt to the Argentinian.
"I learned everything from Diego,” Zola once said. “I used to spy on him every time he trained and learned how to curl a free-kick just like him." He later signed for Parma, from whom he joined Chelsea in a £4.5million transfer when was manager of the Blues.
Zola was an instant hit in English football and scored his first goal for the club in a 2-2 draw with Everton just a few weeks after his arrival. Another goal followed against West Ham United and, before the year was out, he scored both goals in a 2-0 success over Aston Villa. As with all great players, Zola did not need time to adjust to the change in pace of English football, or to the style which Chelsea played.
Instead, he was quickly driving opposition defences and managers crazy, leading Sir to describe him as a "clever little so-and-so." This comment came after Zola had scored a fantastic solo goal in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United in February 1997.
Zola marked the end of that first season with an FA Cup winner’s medal as Chelsea beat Middlesbrough 2-0 at Wembley and he had played a huge part in getting the team to the final.

In addition, he was also voted the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year - the first time the award had gone to a player who had not spent a full season in the league. That was a clear sign of his impact and talent, and the following season he scored his first hat-trick as Chelsea thumped Derby County 4-0 in November 1997.
At the end of that second season, Zola made an even more dramatic, and notable, contribution to the Chelsea cause.
In the European Cup Winners’ Cup final - a competition which no longer exists - Zola scored the only goal against Stuttgart just seconds after coming on as a substitute.
He continued to score many important goals for the club, including a late equaliser against Manchester United at Old Trafford in December 1998. Zola’s most memorable goal for Chelsea was in an FA Cup replay against Norwich City in January 2002 when, from a corner, he ran to the near post and flicked the ball, mid-air, behind him and into the net.
That was his penultimate season at Chelsea, as he gradually became a victim of the rotation policy which had taken over at Stamford Bridge. was the first to use such a system, and that was taken on to even greater lengths by Claudio Ranieri, known as ‘The Tinkerman’.
But Zola finished his Chelsea career with a season’s best tally of 16 goals in 2002/03, with his final goal a brilliant lob against Everton in a 4-1 victory.
His last appearance came as a substitute as Chelsea beat Liverpool 2-1 and Zola skipped off back to Italy to join Cagliari on a free transfer. During his Chelsea career, Zola made 312 appearances, scoring 80 goals in all competitions and he left a huge mark on the club’s history.
The year he left, Chelsea fans voted him the best player ever to play for the club and he remains a hero figure among supporters.
What set Zola apart from not just his team-mates, but his opponents, was not only his size - or lack of it - but his great intelligence as a footballer and warmth as a person.
He was rarely seen without a smile on his face and his enthusiasm for the game rubbed off on all around him.
Few players could match his level of skill and individual ability, and he contributed to some of the finest moments in the Premier League.
