Rain cats and dogs: to be raining very hard 

You’ve probably heard or read this idiom before because it is fairly common. We use this idiom to say that it is or were raining very heavily. This idiom has many origins but most sources in mythology and folklore say that dogs refer to strong winds while cats represent the rain. For that reason, raining cats and dogs has come to mean that it’s raining very hard.
