Yo ho, yo ho, a pirate's life for me.
We pillage, we plunder, we rifle, and loot,
Drink up, me 'earties, yo ho.
We kidnap and ravage and don't give a hoot,
Drink up me 'earties, yo ho.
Are you a music pirate? I think you are. So why not show it by using the perfect wallpaper to match your busy lifestyle of looting!
This image is based off of a drawing by *delya, which you can find HERE. Actually, it's extremely close to the original, which you can see by looking at this GIF! I improvised a bit on the headphones and mp3 player, however, as there wasn't enough detail in the drawing to go from. CLICK HERE is an alternate version of this render in which the character has facial hair, if you liek a more manly pirate.
The second that *delya drew the sketch of this image, I knew I had to render it. And I have to admit, it was one of the funnest images I've ever worked with. I also went really crazy with the modeling (by my standards!). I used this image as an excuse to start getting more detailed with my models, as I've been pretty lazy with geometric detail in the past. This is my favorite image that I've made, by a longshot. And, not only was it fun to make, but I also managed to keep rendertimes down to a bare minimum, as it only took about 3 hours to render!
This image will be available for print once approved. For an example of the quality of the print resolution image, take a look at the links at the bottom of this description.
Technical Details
Made in Maya 6.5, rendered in Mental Ray 3.4 standalone. Lit with two mentalray area lights on either side. No photons were used, only the area lights and Final Gathering with multiple diffuse bouncing enabled. Every surface in this scene is a custom written shader similar to Maya Ramp shaders, except for the ground, which is a mentalray DGS shader. The shader on the skin is similar to the one in Love Juice, which is designed to blur more towards the angle facing the camera, and reflect more towards the angles not facing you. The entire thing was modeled with polygons, no fancy NURBS or subdivision surfaces this time. Actually I lied, some was subdivision surfaces, now shuttup.
Anyways, on to the part everyone likes... THE PICTURES!:
Here is a few screenshots of the various layers I rendered: The Pirate Layer, Background, Headphones
Here's a few shots from inside of Maya (before the model got smoothed by Mental Ray): Lowres Pirate, Lowres Sword, Bag 'n Such
Here was the first ever render of the character: Shitty first test render!
Here is the lighting setup: Two lights and a pirate!
Here's a closeup of the print quality mp3 player: Super Cool mp3 thing!
And finally, here's a PNG version of the image, for full quality splendor: PNG Version
Enjoy!!
[[EDIT]] - Updated the image, because many people complained it would not load!
