이현석 - 잃어버린 시공간을 찾아서 /김미진(조형예술학박사, 홍대겸임교수) 이현석의 작품은 생성과 소멸의 근원적이며 우주적 공간을 표현한다. 두꺼운 마티에르와 갈색, 검은색, 흰색으로 표현된 캔버스는 우리가 살고 있는 땅의 역사를 말하고 있다. 그는 시간의 중첩을 낡고 녹슬고 빛 바랜 표면으로 처리하고, 그 사이 순백의 공간을 만들어 내며 같은 공간에 어둡고 암울한 문명의 공간과 공존시킨다. 복잡하고 어두운 문명의 현실공간과 때묻지 않은 원초적 순수공간은 인간이 처해 있는 상황이며, 마음이다. 침울하고 어두운 공간은 가장자리나 구석에 자리잡으며 우리를 둘러싸고 있음을 암시한다. 순수의 공간에서 과거의 아름다운 태초의 풍경이 아련하게 표현되어 우리의 잠재된 기억을 끌어내고 있다. 이현석은 오래된 듯한 마티에르의 표면 위에 흘러내린 물감자국, 얇은 선들의 드로잉으로 나무, 풀들이 있는 원시적 풍경과 빌딩의 문명의 풍경을 추상적으로 표현하고 있다. 흰색의 사이의 공간은 아직 창조 되지 않은 태초의 풍경들이 언뜻 나타나 답답한 현실에서의 탈출구며 우리의 근원적 휴식처로 자리잡고 있다. 이현석의 추상적 풍경을 따라가 보면 어느 듯 보는 이는 발견된 풍경을 읊조리는 몽상가가 되고, 시인이 되고, 철학자가 된다. 어두운 색채의 표면은 인간의 문명에 의해 상처받은 현실의 공간이다. 그는 천을 찢어 붙이고, 녹슨 오브제를 붙임으로 인류의 문명 공간을 만들어 내고 있다. 역사적으로 수많은 전쟁과 학살로부터 현재까지 치열한 생존경쟁에 의한 각박한 현실은 발전이란 이름으로 행해진 무자비한 개발로 우리의 삶과 환경은 모두 피폐해져 있다. 지구를 지탱하고 있는 마지막 남은 자연들 브라질의 아마존, 남극 등도 마구 개발되어 우리의 미래는 아슬아슬한 지경이다. 오존층에 마구 구멍이 뚫린다든지, 이상기온으로 대 재앙이 오기도 한다. 우리의 삶은 기계 문명으로 풍요로워진 것 같지만 위험과 맞바꾸면서 얻어진 결과다. 자본주의 발전 역시 물질을 최고로 숭배하는 노예들을 수많이 배출해 내고 있다. 이런 상황에서 살고 있는 우리는 하나의 숨쉴 틈이 필요하 다. 우리는 그의 흰색공간에서 자연과 정신의 근원을 찾을 수 있다. 현실의 공간과 공간 사이에 존재하는 흰색공간은 우주의 근원과 연결된 총체적 진화를 갖고 있는 정신과 초자연이 존재하는 곳이다. 이곳에서는 문명을 향한 줄달음이 아닌 멈춤으로 무한한 생명의 존귀함을 깨닫고 새로운 주체성을 만들어 나갈 수 있다. 이현석은 모더니즘의 이분법적인 구도로 우리가 처해 있는 현실을 진지하게 사고하고자 한다. 이미 많은 현대 미술가들의 주제가 된 물질과 정신을 새로운 현대적 해석으로 접근한 회화를 보여주기는 쉽지가 않다. 그러나 그의 흰색공간에서 보여지는 동양의 현대적 해석은 앞으로의 그의 예술의 깊은 영감이 될 것이며 발전의 근원이 될 것이라 기대한다. Looking for the lost time and space Kim, Mee-Jin (professor of Hong-Ik University) Lee, Hyun-Suk's works represent universal space where there are creation and extermination. His voluminous canvas that is expressed with brownish, blackish paints and partial blank is telling the history of the earth. Two different spaces coexist on his canvas: one is complicated and civilized space, that is, faded and discolored area where presents the trace of time: the other is innocent space, that is, space-left and snow-white area. In other words, these two different areas stand for the states of men living on the earth and the situation where we are now. Dark colors are on the edge of the canvas as if men are surrounded by danger. On the other hand, we can recollect peaceful memories of primitive time on the bright colored or blank space. He, with thin lines and trace of paint by making it run, sketches abstractly not only primitive landscape where there are trees and grasses but also man-made landscape such as skyscrapers. Some space left on the canvas stands for a way out and a rest place for us who feel restless, living in a complex society. His works lead us to the abstract landscapes and then we eventually become dreamers, poets and philosophers. Dark colored space of the canvas is the real world where has injured by civilization. The artist creates civilized space by sticking the tore clothes and rusty objects on the canvas. Throughout the history, men have brought on lots of wars and imprudently drained the earth of its natural resources under the pretext of development. Our environment and ecosystem, as a result, are in the impoverished conditions. Even Amazon in the Brasil, Arctic are being exploited so that we afraid the future of the earth and all its people would be at stake. We already have had signs of disaster such as ozone hole, green house effect. We live in a material civilization but we have gotten the material comfort by sacrificing the earth. Besides, growth of capitalism is continuously producing the man of desire for material gain. Living in this situation, people who need a place to find peace might find not polluted nature and pure minds in the partial blank of his works, where men are newly born and realize the preciousness of living things and nature of the earth. In this way, the artist Lee-Hyun-suk tries to investigate the present and reality of our lives by adopting a modernistic approach, dichotomy. He achieved the beauty of a blank in his works by significantly leaving the paper partially blank. Even though it is not easy to create newly interpreted works about 'material and mind', I assure that the partially blank space on his works would keep giving him inspiration to make his work of art.
