History can be thought of as the orderly and systematic reconstruction of the past. An analysis of the historical development of leisure can be useful for a number of reasons. By studying history, one gains knowledge of leisure concepts, an apprecation for the foundation of the profession, an understanding of the role of individuals in history, and knowledge of historical events and places. For professionals, the study of history fosters an understanding of the nature of life satisfaction and the impact of decision making, both in the present and for the future.
For the purpose of studying history and anlyzing concepts of leisure, there are four distinct eras-preliterate society, the agricultural era, the industrial era and the information era. During preliterate society, survival was the main concern, with few boundaries between work and leisure. During the agricultural era, division of created a leisure class. The industrial era dramatically changed society's view of time, with a strong distinction between work time and leisure time. Many institutions were created during the industrial revolutions including park, playgound, settlement houses, national parks, and youth-seving organizations. The current information era, built on a different set of assumption than the industrial era, requires a new set of strategies to meet people's needs.
