'50년 미국 미시건주에서 선천적인 맹인으로 태어남.
(본명 Steveland Judkins)

5살이 될 무렵 이미 여러 가지 악기를 다룰 수 있었고,
9살 때에는 레코드사의 오디션에 합격해
'Mother, thank you'라는 노래로 데뷔.

'82년에는 폴 매카트니와 'Ebony & Ibory'를 불러 히트 했고
'84년에는 영화 에 삽입되었던
'I just called to say I love you'가 대히트를 기록,
'85년에는 'Part time lover'를 히트.
그러나 그 이후에는 이렇다할 히트곡을 내지 못함.
