the liver processes 90 percent of the alcohol a person ingestsl. only 10 percent is removed from the
body through urination. for this reason, large amounts of alcohol directly affect the liver.
large quantities of alcohol can inflame the liver. a condi-tion known as alcoholic hepatitis.
in addition, moderate to heavy drinking over a long period of time can cause cir-rhosis, a disease
characterized by a buid-up of scar tissue in the liver. as scar tis-sue grows, liver cells are progressively less able to function properly. long-term effects of cirrhosis include itching, jaundice, gallstones, an inability to process med-ications effectively, icreased pressure on blood vessels entering the liver (possiblyresulting in serious bleeding in the esophagus or stomach), and mental confusion as the body is less able to remove toxins from the bloodstream. liver damage resulting from cirrhosis is irreversible.
women develop alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis at lower rates of alcohol con-sumption than men. if drinking ceases in some stages of cirrhosis, scar tissue may stop increasing. however, cirrhosis may continue to progress in women even after they stop drinking alcohol.
