새들이 노래하기 시작하면 메리는 이른 봄 피어나는 장미보다 더 매혹적인 소녀랍니다 즐겁고 행복한 생각에 상쾌하고 좋은 아침 솔숲 사이의 강에 사는 소년이 그녀의 연인이기 때문이죠 지금 그 소년 찰리는 소나무들이 막 싹트고 새들이 노래하는 봄에 메리랑 결혼을 하고 초가을이 되자 술익을때쯤 솔숲 사이의 강에서 돌아오겠노라며 떠나갔죠 황량한 기후의 위스콘신의 이른 아침이었어요 그가 마지막 순간까지 결정적인 물살에 휩쓸려 빠져나오려한 시각이.. 고요한 물결이 일렁이고 속삭이는 삼나무가 울창한 곳 아래의 암석 해안에서 그가 숨진걸 발견했어요 현재는 뗏목이나 기타 다른 잡동사니들이 내려와서 작은 조각들로 사라지죠 거기엔 길가던 운전자들이 방문해서 야생화를 심은 외로운 무덤이 있어요 아침마다 꽤 괜찮게 보이는군요 이게 솔숲 사이 강가에서 살던 두 연인들을 기리기 위한 무덤이죠  1941년 뉴욕주 스테이턴 아일랜드에서 태어난 바에즈는
Bob Dylan등과 함께 60년대 포크 음악을 대표하는 아티스트로 평가 되고 있으며 70년대 포크 음악을 대표하는 여성 아티스트 중에 한명이다.
 이 곡은 MBC 드라마 죽도록 사랑해에서 자주 나왔으며 올드팝 팬들과 함께 386 세대들에게 너무나도 많은 사랑을 받은곡이다 .

"솔밭 사이로 강물은 흐르고" 이 곡은 존 바에즈 곡중에서 가장 유명한 곡으로 국내 포크물결을 타고 70년대 통키타 부대의 단골 메뉴이기도 하였다. 슬픈 사랑의 이야기를 격조높게 묘사한 곡으로 애수의 찬 목소리로 듣는 경험은 사뭇 이채롭다
