결혼식 날의 웃음도 없고
식장을 걸어 들어갈 일도 없고
화환도 웨딩 드레스도 모두 끝이야
그 날 밤 우린 강가로 가서
강물에 뛰어 들었어
그리고 강을 따라 내려 갔지
난 존스타운 회사에서
막노동꾼으로 일하고 있었어
하지만 경기가 좋지 않아서
요즘에는 일감이 그리 많지 않아
소중하게 여겨졌던 것들이
이제 모두 허공으로 사라져 버렸어
난 잊으려 애를 쓰고
메리는 애써 외면하려 해
하지만 메리를 태우고 형의 차를 몰았던 건 기억해
저 아래 저수지에서 그을린 메리는 젖어 있었지
밤이면 강둑에 누워 메리를 끌어 안고
숨결 하나도 놓치지 않으려 했어
지금 그 추억들이 다시 밀려와서
나를 놓아주지 않아
마치 주문처럼 나를 떠나지 않아
실현되지 못하는 꿈은 거짓일까
아니면 그보다 더 비참한 걸까
그래서 난 강가로 내려가지
강이 말라 버린 걸 알면서도 말이야
그래서 메리와 나는 오늘 밤 강가로 내려가서
강물을 타고 떠내려 가는 거야
20세기 미국을 빛낸 100인에 포함될 정도로 국민가수인 그는
'Born To Run' 등의 노래에서 소외되어 있는 모든 사람들의
아픔, 좌절, 그리고 그들의 가냘픈 희망을 불같은 격정으로
노래하며 상업성으로 물들어있던 미국 롹 음악을 다시 부활시키면서
엘비스와 밥 딜란 이후 최고 롹 가수가 되었다.
1993년 영화 Philadelphia 주제곡 'Streets Of Philadelphia'가
올해의 노래로 지정되고 아카데미상도 받는 등 꾸준히 활약을
하며 그리고 몇 해전에는 베스트 앨범을 내놓았는데 그 중에서
'The River' 는 그의 애절한 그리움을 잘 표현한 노래이다.
1980년데 LP 2장 짜리로 발표된 「The River」는 미국의 중산계층의
삶, 그중에서도 외롭고 반복되는 단순한 일상생활에 찌든 사람들의
애환과 약간 삐뚤어진 10대의 방황과 사랑을 가사에 담아
스트레이트한 록 비트에 실어 들려주는 시원한 로큰롤 앨범이다.
내용적으로는 '75년도에 발표한 Born To Run의
연장선상에 위치한 느낌을 주지만 앨범 전체적인 완성도에
있어 한 단계 위의 평가를 받고 있다.
