 심해를 탐험한 사람의 숫자는 우주여행을 한 사람의 숫자보다 적다. 우리는 심해에 대해 알고 있는 것보다 달에 대해 알고 있는 것이 더 많다. 
심해를 탐험할 수 있는 탐사정은 전세계적으로 5대밖에 없다. 이들이 지금까지 탐사한 심해의 면적은 전체 심해의 1%에도 미치지 못한다.
